OT Corn and Fertilizer

Hey guys. This will be my first year doing field corn. I did a soil test myself and Im jus wondering what a recomended fertilizer I should use.
PH-Nuetral
Nitrogen-Very Low
Phosphorus- Medium
Potash-Medium

I'll be using a FORD 309 Planter and I was also wondering about how much fertilizer it will take per acre using the 309 with the hopper all the way open. Also wondering about how many lbs of seed per acre. Will be planting Cropland 851RR Seed.

Lot of variables there...depending on where you are.....I would say 250# potash, 150# urea as starter. Then more N at side dress......

Corn seed is "seeds per acre".....not necisarilly pounds/acre.....good luck...

Brandon your planter should have a chart on it advising you of what settings to use. If it is not there you should be able to google the planter and find the settings on-line. At this time of year I would put down triple 12 unless I could get ahold of some good manure. Come fall I would plant a green manure to work in the soil next spring and then you won"t have the nitrogen issue at planting.

these fields where hay fields that got turned under. More than likely Ill plant wheat this fall to turn under next spring. The rate setting on my planter is gone so its wide open. So you think triple 12 would be a good mix this time

wide open will be too much - too hot and too expensive. As my name implies, I am kornfused, sounds like you are using a seeder as opposed to a planter. A planter has plates (no setting) and creates a furrow to drop the seed in. If your planter has the ferizer boxes on it and that is what is wide open, I would suggest some careful trial and error. You want to work with the adjustment to where it is dropping some but not too much. An idea of how much would be to think in terms of broadcasting the fertilizer - The fertilizer bags provide a chart of how much to use.

Are you planting this corn to make a profit? How many acres are you going to plant? More than 320?

We plant 30,000 kernels per acre on 30" rows. You need plenty of Nitrogen for corn. Your fertilizer supplier should be able to work with you on the yields.

You want to plant seeds per acre with corn, it is much more fussy than other crops. 19,000 or so in sandy dry soils, 34,000 seeds per acre for top yield great ground good water.

You want about a lb of nitrogen available for every bu of corn you hope to raise. If last year's crop was a legume, like soybeans, clover, or alfalfa, you can cut back on this as a legume supplies some N.

You need some P & K for what the corn removes. It probably will like over 100# of eaCH, BUT YOU CAN GET BY WITH 50-60 OF EACH IF YOUR GROUND IS PRETTY GOOD.

You often can't get enough N put down with the planter, need to put the N down early, or after planting - sidedress.

It would be better to blend together the fertilizer you need for what your soil test shows you need, not a generic 12-12-12. That won't give you enough N, if you want 150-200 bu corn, you need to add about than much N.

Using anything like the tripple 12 at a fertilizer box wide open rate you would put on 3 times what it would take to burn up the plant. Perhaps if you can find a way to set the fertilizer unit for a rate of 200# per acre (unlimited the rate could be a thousand pounds per acre) (that would be on 40" rows, 30" would be around 260#) you would not burn up the plant and broadcast the rest and would get a good crop. And possibly try to set the planter for a seed drop of 6-7", closer the stalks do not have room to grow, depending on soil that might still be a too heavy a population but go no closer than that.

The fetilizer rate adjustment was jus stuck. I got it so I can adjust it now! Ok so the plan is to get some fertilzer mixed based on my soil analysis. Im just tryin to determine about how much fertilize I need. Also, Im plantin ROundUp Ready. Should I still cultivate it? Im thinking Ill have to. Becaus it will probably need side dressed. Whats the best way to sidedress? I was gonna broadcast some fertilzer and then cultivate it. Since Im probably going to cultivate should I still spray it?
