Alright, im normally a truck guy and fuel prices are starting to hurt. So im thinkin maybe goin wiht an SUV type with a V6/. First, do you guys think the tracors will get mad being parked next to something other then my truck (there, its tractor related)? Second, any tips or warnings on which vehicle is better, fuel mileage, etc. thanks guys. -Toby

I bought an 05 Escape with a V-6 and 4wheel drive in 2009. It had 39000 miles then and has 51000 now. I really like it, mileage on highway is 25 to 27 mpg. It is small and easy to get around town and park, yet it's roomy in the interior. It would not be a pickup replacement for towing, but for normal getting from here to there, it's great.
Sorry I can't help on the Explorer as I've never had one.

Don't know much about Fords (I'm more of a Dodge/Chevy person) but A thought popped in my head. You might check out thise Honda Ridgelines. Theoretically it should get good gas mileage since it's a Honda and it's still a truck.

Drive a coupls of 4 bangers and then the V6. I have a Geo Tracker with 1600 cc 16 valve 4 cyl. It will run out at 90 mph. It get 31 mpg back and forth to town.
I have a SWB F150 reg cab, stepside ,V6 5 spd. It is wicked fast, will run just shy of 115, but top mileage feather footing it around is 20 mpg.
I really rarely use the 150 Have a 5x12 trailer I use with the Tracker for farm use. It will pull 42 bales of hay all day.
Unless you consistently have 5 people in the vehicle you don't need a V6.

We got my wife a 2011 4 cylinder front wheel drive Escape.

She gets 27 MPG. real nice SUV. Good in the snow too.

Looks like all fullsize are within 1 or 2mpg of each other with the Nissan Titan at the bottom and Ford/Chevy/Dodge/Toyota/Honda all right about the same, depends if you drive around town or on the highway.

My Ranger is real good in the snow so I'd believe an Escape to be so too. A year ago I went hunting with my cousins in their Escape, it was an '04 I think and I've never ridden in such a poor offroad vehicle. Even my Dad's Jeep Cherokee with car tires (which was poor offroad) was better. We got it stuck so many times I can't count. Only good thing was that because it was small and light it got out pretty easy.

Of course they've revised the Escape at least once since then.

Its good on gas but I guess if I were really worried about that I'd drive a car. Oh wait, I do...

Just my $.02 worth. I have been a staunch Ford man for 50 years. Bought a '91 Explorer about 4 years ago. I never drove it through a winter, because it would lay down every year in deer season (1st weekend in Dec). Clutch, 5 speed tranny, fuel pump, mass air flow indicator etc, etc, etc. Enough is enough. Junked that money pit and bought a 97 Buick Le Sabre with the 3.8 V-6 and get twice the mileage the Explorer ever got. I wouldn't take another Explorer as a gift. My wife, on the other hand has a 07 front wheel drive Escape with the V-6 and gets along fine.

just saw a revue today on tv about the expolrer, the new one is not the same machine, its now built unibody frame like a car instead of the truck chassis they had been using. the in dash display, and control system had a touchscreen that looked like a distraction and traction controll is all computer controled,no more lockers so its a tall all wheel drive minivan now

My daughter has a 2003 Explorer 2WD, 4.0 L V6. Drives it like hell. Totally reliable but fuel mileage is only 14 MPG city and freeway.

Just bought an '11 esscape ,V6,AWD XLT option/trim level. It replaces a '97 explorer AWD 302 V8. One of the best vehicles I've ever driven in snow. 20 MPG on the interstate at 70 MPH.
The escape only has 2200 miles so far so can't say anything regarding fuel mileage but it seems to be good in the snow and drives and handles fine. This in addition to tractors and an '06 F 250 4WD .

We have an '03 Escape. Pretty good little CAR! It is NOT a truck. Design is based on the Tauris platform I am told. It does haul and tow pretty well for a small vechicle.
V-6 get's in the high teens around town. Never have had it out on long trips except when we were towing a small teardrop trailer. Which it did like a champ.
That all said if I were to buy something to replace it I would look at another Excape but I would drive other rigs as well.

We have had both Explorer and Escape as wife"s vehicle and very happy with both. "92 Explorer had over 200,000 miles when we got rid of it, "95 Explorer (which had a snowplow when we bought it) had 180,000 miles with no major problems. Both had 4.0 engine and got 18-20 mpg short trip average. She now drives a 2005 Escape with 3.0 that gets around 22 mpg. All are good on snow and ice. Escape with all wheel drive is smoother to drive on snow as the older Explorers with auto 4x4 took hold after spinning began. Don"t know about newer Explorers.

Owned a 97 the first year for the 4.0 SOHC engine. Bought it Germany. Since it was an export model, rev limiter was disconnected and a 160 MPH speedo. Drove the autobahn at times 130 mph plus all day long. Shipped it back to the states in 2000. Drove it another 3 years until I bought a 2003 which I still have love them. Yea 14 mpg's around town/short trips, interstate 20 mpgs. Also leasted 36 Escapes for my personnel in Bosnia/Croasia in 95-99. They had the 2.3 litre diesels in them (35 MPGS loaded with gear/tools). Great vehicles also, just considered them smaller versions of the Explorer. We never got the Escapes here in the US until 2000. The European versions of the Escapes, Explores, and Focuses have diesels. Wish we could get them here, but the UAW won't allow those engines since they're made in Germany and Italy.

We picked up the 2011 Escape we ordered back in early February. It is a bare bones 4wd with automatic, and 4 cylinder. It only has 1200 miles on it, but power and acceleration are good. On a trip to Paris Il. last week (250 miles each way) I got 27.5 mpg on way out, but only 25.5 on way back due to a 20+mph head wind. It has been averaging 27 mpg on highway though.

I own a 2003 Taurus, 2001 Explorer, 2004 Explorer, 2004 F150 4X4 Super Crew, and a 2004 Focus.

I drive the hell out of that Focus just because of the cost of gas! I really love driving my F150 but do that only on nice days! She's my baby!

that's just the reason i'm keeping my 2001 explorer, only has 80k, 4.0 v-6 auto 2wd. 18-22 mpg. has a frame under it. don't no uni -body any more. like look of newer ones, but ford blew it making them a car,van,cross-over suv.

I'd be very surprised if the UAW has any input into the diesel question. Ford makes lots of engines in Mexico, Canada, and maybe other places, and the UAW isn't there either. And those engines get shipped to UAW plants, and put into vehicles. I worked for GM, and I asked management for years why we didn't have a small diesel, but they seem to think it was a curiosity, not a serious option.

You are comparing apples and oranges.

The 'sploder (up 'til the last year or two) is built on a TRUCK frame and the 'scape is an unibody tin-can car sort of thing.

(But, at least it's not a "ricer"!)

Oh, yeah, if you want a SAD $$$$ story, ask me about what it cost my friend to repair his (NEVER off-road) executive wife's Escape AWD!

Sounds good up front, but figure how much you drive and do the monkey math to see how long it will take for the swap or addition to pay for itself... If you are gonna just add something, get you a VW golf or something small with frt wheel drive or AWD diesel if possible/affordable for your DD and use the truck when you need it. You'd be surprised what you can put in a golf

The Ford emblem was prolly even made in china..............

Ludwig-

The Escape was never intended to be an "off-road" vehicle.

The problem with your Dad's Cherokee was tjh tires; I have a '94 Cherokee with normal mud and snow tires and it will go about anywhere--on the roads or up through the fields and the woods in all kinds of weather. And we have hills around here.

I'm gonna agree with Dave2 on this one.

I had been driving my truck (F250 - 5.4 gas) to and from the farm for the last 5 years, it gets about 12mpg. The cost of gas when it is over $3/gal is just about killing me, $600+/month.

finally decided to park the truck at the farm and use it for farm duties and went out and bought a 2-door DIESEL, 6 Speed VW Golf. It takes some getting used to being in such a small car but with the back seats folded down there is a ton of room and here is the kicker,

My door to door total mileage for a round trip (80+miles) is averaging 42mpg!

I am saving over $400 per month and not loading my truck up with commuting mileage.

Depends on what you need. The 2011 and older Explorer can tow and has a lot more interior room and can havea third row seat, it can also go "off road" a little better than the Escape but you pay for with 16-20 MPG fuel usage.

The Escape is much smaller gets 24 to 30 MPG and can go off road if you're daring but its AWD system is much better for use at highway speed with streatches of ice and snow.

Surprisingly, the Escape actually holds its value better than the older Explorers and will probably hold it even better as fuel continues to go up.

We"ve got a Mercury Mariner, which is Mercurys
version of the Escape. Ours is the Premier model
which has virtully every option available, and
a V6 engine. In town we get around 22 mpg. On
long trips it gets 24.9 at 60 miles per hour...
yea, i"n that slow guy in front of you, but I
try to stay in the right lane on the interstate
highway. Ours has an in-dash mileage calculator,
but it"s not perfectly accurate. Doing the math
on miles and gallons gets 25.4 where the dash
calculator says 24.9. I"m happy with the fuel
use, and it"s comfortable for 2 adults, a dog,
and lots of baggage. 4 wheel drive is great on
winter roads in Wisconsin!

got a 2002 cummins dually diesel for trailers

and have two vw jetta diesels.. get between 38 mpg to 53 mpg with them, 42 mpg is about ave for a lot of hyway driving. 38 is into a head wind, and 53 is with a tail wind. I have had about 10 vw diesels now and all have done between 36 and 44 mpg as average. Only now I get the 6 speed automatics as I'm getting too stiff for all the shifting. Wife doesnt mind either.

SPOOK, GM and Chrysler Europe was making money and selling vehicles. The UAW is to blame for the downfall and the creation of Goverment Motors here in this country. Who supports/provides the money to the nnalert? UAW/all unions for that matter without the members consent. They're just protecting and lining the pockets of the union bosses at our expense.

A couple people have mentioned Escape being AWD, it is not. It is a front wheel drive that kicks in the rear wheels when needed. In normal driving the rear wheels just coast along.
