good bye hay fields

I've noticed in my neck of the woods a lot of hay fields are being plowed up. I haven't seen new ones seeded down to replace them. The commercial hay guys seem to be moving out of hay into corn. The recession got rid of a lot of back yard horses so the hay market softened. May be a different story next winter.

I'll be darned,

Just bought another cow pony yesterday. That makes 4 additional this past year alone.

Between the cows/calves, the yearling heifers, the bulls and those saddle mounts, I need all the hay I can get. :>(

High corn prices!Around here, thhe same thing is happening. All the farmers are planting corn, corn, corn!

Allan,I will have all the hay you will need.Less than 5 minutes ago,I was offered the lease of 80 acres of alfalfa-centerpivot irrigated.Hope the hay prices stay up and I will have a market for it!Steve

Any guess as to what the small square market is gonna do? I figure rounds are bound to move up some, with cattle prices being strong, the drought in the South, and corn prices going up. But I don't really roll any hay, maybe a few rolls off one farm if I run out of room for my squares. In 2009 I still did really well, this past year has been murder. Actually had guy offer me $1.25 a bale out of the barn a few weeks ago. I told him I'd use it for mulch before I sold it that cheap. Good thing is I've got about 300 bales to deliver to local doctor($5 a bale and he doesn't touch it) and after that, all I've got left is about 150 bales of decent hay left.

Seed prices took a dump out here in Oregon and every one cut their grass seed for hay, the price of hay took a dump so they plowed it under an went to wheat or other grains. We planted wheat this year hope it does not take a dump too.

Maybe prices are up on the better classes, but common "local" hay is way down (western WA)- neighbor still has a barn full of last years, still see signs out, and some lady on the radio want ads was trying to give some away last week.

The same thing is happening here, big time. I've seen multiple classified ads this spring selling alfalfa and sudex seed some by the pallet. "I ordered this, but decided to go with corn instead". There's definitely going to be a lot of corn in the ground this summer. I'm glad I still have a barn full of 2010 square bales because I really don't want to be buying any hay next winter.
