First field work today.

Well, winter is officially over, I hope. Yeaterday we had 87.9 degrees, todday back in the mid 40"s, and windy... So today, I finally got things arranged so I could start disking a field to break up the sod prior to moldboard plowing. Going to plants oats/alfalfa, need to get it in as soon as I can get the field prepped. I"m still frozen through even after spending an hour in the house - open station tractor. Haven"t seen anybody else out tilling yet - think they"re waiting for soil to dry down a bit more. Mine"s fairly light, and I got away with it on this field. Couple places were a bit "iffy."

Our air temp today was 77 but very high winds. Unable to work outside. Some gusts up to 50 mph. I think we usually get your weather 2 to days later. Glad to hear about your labor, it makes my day.

May I ask why you are discing sod before plowing it down. Here in CNY we just plow it down, and then disc it twice over, and Then hit it with a spring tooth harrow, for seeding corn, and an extra trip with the spring tooth and a trailing roller basket for alfalfa with cover crop of small grain. The Acg.

Yes. The only time we ever disced before plowing was to try to chew up corn stalks. Dad used to send me out with the AC WD or JD 50 and transport disc. I hated that because the plowing and fitting tractor- the WD45- had the remote. The WD didn't, and he never hooked the cyl. up on the 50. So when I hit a wet spot I couldn't chew through, it was crank up the ratchet jack. Same for transport to and from the field.
I like now better. Chew up the stalks with a 15' batwing. Till with a disc/chisel and 200HP.

Cutting it up so I can get thru it with moldboard plow. Many year old sod, will clog even a good plow. Should have hogged it down last fall. Also trying to level it some. Previous renters weren't too careful about furrows, etc. Many of you guys will say I'm over tilling, but I want it very smooth, as I plant alfalfa with oats, and need a fairly smooth field for baling hay following years.

Where are you at in NY. Here in the NE tip of Otsego Co. we hit a high of 76.2 F @4:30. Average wind speed was 11.2mph, with several 25mph gusts and a high gust at 12:45pm of 30.1. Rain fall today was .17in. My location is sheltered a bit by a woods to my west which affects my wind speed from that direction. Info from a Davis Vantage Vue Weather Station.

neighbor was disking up some food plots yesterday here in southern Michigan, but just a tiny tractor and disk, no way I can get in. Any time I disked sod and then plowed it turned out to be a disaster. The furrows would not roll and trash just clogged everything up.

Anyone ever heard of attaching #9 wire to the coulters. Drags that crud down under. Cut the wires to about 8-10 feet long.

My dad alway drug a #9 wire fastened to the coulter when plowing corn stalks. It kinda foulded the stalks in the botttom of the furrow.
