OT. GMC pickup update

I posted a few days ago about my truck not running good after it warmed up. I removed vacuum hose off of the EGR valve truck runs great. Put new EGR valve now the truck dies when I put it in drive so I removed hose off new valve truck runs great. What could be causing this? What are the repercussions of running truck with the valve disconnected.
THANKS

Hi Dan,

I used to put a bb in that vacuum line. Everything hooked up, but just doesn't operated the EGR. :>)

Otherwise, think I'd check that EGR solenoid. Sounds like she's stuck "on".

Yep!! I worked as machanic in an independent auto repair shop back in the 70s. Dis-abling the EGR was one of the first things we did to cure poor performance and rough running on any newer car. We called that operation "re-routing" the vacuum hoses.

I recall having a manual that had all the hose routing scematics to bypass emission controls back then. Pretty crude by todays standards .

i forget what year model your truck is but if theres a sensor in the egr system,it could cause some erratic running...if no sensor...bb works great.

It must be a 94 or older for certain and if it isn't throwing a check engine light with the egr disconnected. Probably 86 or older.

(quoted from post at 09:54:07 04/10/11) Eliminating the EGR tended to make some vehicles
knock at highway speeds.

Yes it did, but the work around for that issue was to also dis-able the temperature controlled vacuum advance and connect the advance direct to the vacuum source, and then set the ignition timing to pre-emissions specs. Doing this nearly always resulted in improved performance as well as a noticeable increase in miles per gallon.

Their is a simple check for the egr system on yer truck,,, look it up.
leave it disconnected and cylinder temps will rise and may cause damage your call...

You probably have a bad EGR control solenoid. If you can live with the Check Engine lite on, just leave the hose off the valve. It will run better and not cause any problems as long as it doesn't experience pre-ignition ping. I drove my 91 GMC with the EGR valve unplugged for many years and it was running great when I sold it last winter. HTH
Good Luck and God Bless
