Have ya'll heard about this new Cadillac, CTS I think, that's supposed to top out at 185 mph? Supposed to compete with Mercedes, Porsche, etc.

Anyway, a local retired John Deere dealer bought one. He and his wife drove it to our local country club this evening.

Oh, by the way, his house is next to the club. By the time he found a parking place, he was parked less than 100 feet from the edge of his lawn.

Cadillac has had cars that will top 185 for several years. You can even get them with a stick tranny.

If the guy just spent 70 large on a "show-off" car, and belongs to the country club, you can darn sure bet he ain't gonna walk over there!

Those cars are actually a Opel Record based, built in Russelheim, Germany. Wish the UAW would allow the Opel diesels to be shipped here. That engine 1.9 litre was the Formula 1 winner for a couple of years running against the big boys with V8's and still would get 40 mpg running at 200 mph. Would also like to be able to get the 2.5 litre diesels that Chrysler put in the Jeeps, Town & Country's and even Fords in their Excapes and Focuses. Great milage vehicles that we can't get here because of the UAW.

From where he wound up parking, it was a shorter walk to his house than to the club.

BTW, he was smart enough to bail out and retire while he was still sole owner of the store, before the multi-dealer corporations got into it.

You quote "would get 40 mpg running at 200 mph". Kinda hard to believe. Do you have a referenced source to back this up? I would be most interested in reading about a real test that came up with 40 miles on a gallon of fuel at 200 miles per hour!!! Tom

Don't think I'd buy the 40/200 mark either... nor would I want to go there... but the point is that the big three could do a lot better in the mileage department. VW can get roughly 40 mpg from a Jetta 1.9L TDI at 100 mph and high 50's if you drive more cautiously... All of this in a 2 ton tank of a car. Much better could be done on this side of the pond.
