Looking for some advice. Will 18.4/38 duals work with 20.8/38 wheels? One tire man says yes, another says too much difference in height. Thanks for any input.

I just checked my Firestone Data book. It shows 3 inches difference in diameter. So from axle to ground you have 1.5 inches, given roughly even tread height. So they should grab when you need them to and hold up a fair amount of the weight.

Years ago when we first tried duals, it was recommended to go with a size smaller. The main tire was already leaving a track before the dual did much. Never again.
What works well is a worn tire of the SAME size for the dual if it's only used part time. And/or run the dual softer than the main tire if axle loading, or especially rough ground is a concern.

Yeah, it seems you only need duallies in dust or mud, so if a taller pair is all that grips hard dry flat ground, well, you don't need 4 right then anyway. Did you ever notice dump trucks? They rarely have all 8 hitting the pavement at once, probably never when empty, but loaded in the soft stuff, all are working... I saw a set of aftermarket- not tires, but more like angle iron steamboat paddlewheels, they bolted to the rim, stuck out like the chariot in the BenHur movie, and didn't come close to hard ground...

We've run 18.4 duals with 20.8's for the better part of 30 years.

It's not ideal, but it's better than nothing at all. The wheel tracks made by the 20.8s are way shallower than if the tractor had no duals.

If you have a choice of 18.4 duals or no duals, go with the 18.4 duals.

Jimont it depends on what you need the duals to do. if you want to cut down on compaction, no 18.4X38 wont do much good. If you want them for occasional traction? What brand 20.8X38's, what brand 18.4"s? The titan 18.4s are usually taller than the goodyear or firestone, that might help some.

Thanks for your input fellas. We do have a pair of 18.4/38 duals with hardware, but the tires are only about 40% tread,so may try to find some used 20.8 tires.
