Another what's it worth question....

Well, my aunt has an 871 LP wide front tractor that her and my uncle bought new. My uncle was a part time farmer and it"s never really been worked hard- just a utility tractor- has less than a 1000 hrs on it. Never any major work done to it. I need to go over and look at it but from what I remember it"s in great original shape- always shedded. I"ve been looking for a nice utility tractor but I"m not crazy about LP or the SOS tranny. I"m not going to work it much either- back blade, occasional bush hog and 3pt rototiller. I"d like to keep it in the family and it would satisfy my need right now also. Would also make an easy restoration project if I decided to do it. What would you say is a fair price- don"t want to rip her off or overpay either. Thanks!

I think if as described $3000.00 would not be out of the question. It would bring that at many a Auction, and I would not be concerned at all with a SOS Transmission or LP for fuel.I had a model 2000 with SOS and really liked it for blade work and mowing.

That is a nice find, LP, the oil stays clean, probably still see the cross hatching in the cylinder walls. For what you mention using it for, perfect tractor to have, Select-O-Speed would be great for a 3 pt tiller. I grew up on and spent many hours on a 64 4000 S-O-S, cut, raked and baled with it, pushed snow, manure spreader, bottom plow and disc'd with it, had a gear for everything, just have to take care of that trans, regular maintenance mostly.

The only drawback with LP is the HP rating might be a tad less, and cold weather starting can be trouble, LP does not like to vaporize well at certain cold temperatures, though this one must have the factory LP tank and set up, I have an 850 converted to LP, I have to keep it in a heated garage, or it is hard starting and or to keep running. I now cover the tank with blanket, when running in cold temps.

I like LP. You have to understand you fuel system a little more than a gasoline engine. I bet this tractor is a some what rare version. LP and A SOS trans in one package.

Not much to go on here. Maybe $3K if the tires are good. If it is a factory LP model it might bring a little more to a collector. They are not real common.
Personally I'd just fix whatever leaks it has and do whatever needs doing to make it run real good and leave the paint alone. If it's halfways decent just clean it up real well. Maybe wax it.
Go to a tractor show you see rows and rows of pretty red and gray tractors. The one in original work clothes with a bit of patina on it is the one that I'll usually stop and admire.
As for the LP, sometimes I'd like to have one. Would make me secretly glad to be beating our tax and spend governor out of his 20¢ gas tax.
