I am looking to get a bottom plow and was wondering with the tractor I have how large and the quantity of spades? I currently own a allis chalmers one seventy diesel.
Thanks for the advice in advance!

You know,I don't care if the wanna-be's come here with questions, but at least TRY to use the proper terminology to get a decent answer.

I Appolize if I don"t know the correct terminology. I was just trying to get some advice from the people who would give me the correct information. I sadden by the term you used. I am in my 20"s and purchased 10 acres and trying to use my land for sustainable agriculture. If you could correct my terminology on the plow I am researching I would be thankful?

Don't worry about him, "moldboard" might have been what he was referring to, and your question is a good one, wanting to know what matches that tractor, I hate when people do that... they knew what you were asking LOL !

PS, go over to the Ford board and call a "select-O-speed" a select-o-matic or any variant thereof, you'll get the same reaction, they know what you are talking about, it's good when people help others learn the correct terminology, but not by talking down to em, just help em out and leave the attitude home LOL !

Jts........not everybody is an expert. There's a bunch of us wanna-bes who hang out on 'here'; some of us even know the proper use of apostrophes. Ask away.........

I have been looking at farm auctions and on CL, I can get a 4 bottom or moldboard plow for less money then a 3 bottom. The area I live in is all clay, so another question would be could I step up to a 4 bottom?
Thanks.

If you can get one cheaper, why not buy a 4-bottom plow that has an easily removable 4th. Then, if it pulls too hard in your clay soil, take off the 4th and use it as a 3-bottom.

Here in south central Mn. in our heavy gumbo soil for you to pull 3 bottom with 170 you would need to pile on a ton of weight front and rear and set hitch on tractor and plow just right. If all you have to plow is 10 acres just try and find a 2 bottom. That way you can hook your tractor on the way it is and go.

Clay plows hard. 3x16 will be all you want.

Yes 4 bottom plows are generally cheaper around here too. Many can easily be turned into 3s, leaving you some extra parts. Some take a bit more work(like a band saw).
