OT - Neat gate latch.

Here's a gate latch I'm going to try and replicate this summer. I'd never seen a catch latch like this until this one. When the gate is latched it holds it well and all you have to do is lift one of the rings to swing the gate out. Then you can sling the gate back shut and it will catch it and hold it well. Gentle swing that is. Anyway, I thought it was cool and figured I'd share.

Lift to open gate.

It's just about to shut. See the ring is lifted.

Never seen one like it, 'though there are similar ones on google images. Don't know the intended use, but it wouldn't work for me in a cattle pen. Cattle would be forever tearing their hide open on the metal "stub". Don't have pics, but I've never seen one I liked better than my home-made ones. 3/4 inch horizontal rod (through 3/4 inch pipe) for latch with valve springs to make it self-latching; 3/4 inch vertical pipe for handle which extended above gate for access from either side of gate, plate steel with slot for latch to catch into. Had several dozen at various places/corrals and they worked great.

There it is. It's been about four years but I knew I shouldn't have thrown those old bearing races out.
