thinking garden how do you plant your onions sets/bulbs seed transplant plants i know some onions only come one way or the other but what is the reason or advantage to either method

I always plant sets. I crowd the rows and then thin them when they are edible as green onions.
I tried seed and plants, but didn't have any luck with either.

My sister does most of that, and she always plants seeds. We do about 300 or 400 most years. I just do what I'm told when the time comes.

after many years of trial and error i finally dicovered the secret to getting onion's from seed...plant em about a 1/8" deep and turn the soaker hose on till you see sprouts...once plants develop bulbs you can thin or transplant...been doing it that way for about 20 years and aint had a crop failure yet...i water DEEP once a week unless it rains...yaaaaaa rite...rain...whats that?

I've had good luck planting sweet onions (Walla Walla) from seed directly. They don't get quite as big as when I buy transplants, but good enough. Sweet onions don't keep though, I just use them to eat fresh and in the soup and salsa that I freeze in the fall.

Here in the North East with a shorter growing season, I have best luck with sets.
They seem to do better in sandy soil.

Took me years to figure this out. I plant sets as early in the spring as I can work up a small part of the garden. Mid-April usually here in Central NY. Planting that early lets the sets get some size before the hot weather comes in. I get nice size onions that store, well, until at least right now each spring.

Carrots are the companion plant with the onion family.Pests can smell the carrots from a great distance, onions block the smell.

Onion plants are the best because you can plant them earlier. I plant when the garlic is up...this year was a little late because of the rain, but got 6000 in today. Last year I planted the second week of March and had a lot of 2 1/2 lb onions in July. I get my plants from Dixondale in south Texas....buy them by the box and they are pretty cheap.
