New CPR Method

Interesting. The life you save may be your own. Not to worry though John, the girls will never give up on a chance for mouth to mouth with you.

I was re-certified last summer in CPR. They hadn't officially changed the "rules" at that time, but they taught us the new method and told us it would probably be coming.

I've been certified for almost 30 years, it used to take a couple of training sessions to get your card.... now it takes a couple of hours. I hope this will encourage more people to take the class, in the end, it will save more lives.

Thanks for posting the video, someone may be walking around in 6 months because of you.

It seems the rules are never changing, but they are getting more user friendly. Way back thirty five years ago, we had to learn two different methods, One for the Red Cross, the other for the Amarican Heart Association.

It does help increase the odds, but overall numbers are not real great regardless. The new auto pulse units are something I hope every EMS unit can afford some day soon. The problem is as always a lack of funds. I think some of our grants should be directed to save lives in the USA sometimes instead of overseas.

There are alot of rewarding deeds in our lives, but pulling someone back from death ranks right up there. You will always have the ego driven medical folks, but it does seem that things are now turning in to a educated common folk approach.

We as EMS, in Iowa, will not see this change for years, due to the big dogs having to give their stamp of approval.

This method is a exception to alot of the rules, like seat belts---no money trail.

Thank You for posting, every one of us should send this to every contact we have.

Interesting, I was told this was coming last august when I was recertified for first aid, CPR and AED. My boss in his good forsight bought an AED unit 2 years ago and had a bunch of us trained to use it and CPR. The previous year one of my guys suffered a massive and fatal heart attack during lunch break. We did all we could to help but we couldn't save him. It took EMS almost 10 minutes to travel the 1.5 miles from their base to our plant. Nobody will ever know if we had had proper training and the AED on hand if we could have saved John, but now we've leveled the playing field a little.

That does sound like it would be good to keep blood flow . I was certified for several years, but not since retirement.

I do see the first guy doing it the right way as described , but when his relief partner took over He didn't clench his fingers so the heel of his hand would make proper contact.

Thanks John - I sent it to everyone on my e-mail list.

The life I save might be my own. . .

Just kidding, but then you never know. . .

I tried the old mouth/chest compression CPR on a fellow who collapsed in the gas station where I worked part time. I'm sorry to say that he didn't survive, but I felt better knowing that an honest effort was made to help him. I'm glad to see this method being pushed. Folks are naturally fearful of getting up close and personal with a complete stranger. Even with the old CPR training, there's a huge difference in the plastic CPR dummy and the real thing.

Thanks again for posting this.

Been a while, since I was certified, and I"m pretty rusty. Had heard about this before. Would make it a bit easier, for sure!

Call 911, and start CPR.... Told my wife, who is a nurse, to hang it up if I go down. By the time EMS makes a leisurely run across the county, I"ll be gone anyway. She couldn"t keep up CPR for that long, - either method.

I was first certified on this method almost 2 years ago. The "song" that was played to get the rhythm was the Bee Gee's Stayin Alive. It is a new way because most people do not carry a barrier for the mouth when doing breaths. It was also found that the time used in breathing was better used to keep blood flowing to the brain. I have never been required to use this new method, but they say its better.

Queen's 'Another One Bites the Dust' is also the correct rhythm. 'Stayin Alive' would be a lot less morbid I suppose...
