OT Finally peace and quiet....

Yesterday kids played soccer and football in the yard and today I was actually heard snoring while asleep napping in the late afternoon.

WHY? Because we took our Standard Schnauzer and gave her to the Standard Schnauzer Club of America dog rescue. GOOOOD riddens. All this dog did was bark. She barked at leaves blowing across the lawn. She barked at US as we approached the house.
God forbid a "stranger", neighbor or one of the kids friends came over. Roxy rarely "remembered" who was friend or foe and barked at everyone.

SSCA rescue people were not surprised. Dog bred to catch, kill rodents. Poor eyesight so anything that moved was a rodent. Couple that with a overly strong instinct to "protect" the castle
and not enough brains to remember who belonged in the castle and its been 3 yrs of hell. Kids did not even want the dog anymore. Wife was only one sad to see her go.

Now If I could just get the kids to do all there and MY chores I would be in heaven.

Initially, the dog choose you?? Have you heard people complaining about the neighbours children and that would be attributed to??? same with a dog , it"s all in the training or lack of it..
 
We've had a couple of miniature Schnauzers, and son and family have one now- my recollection is that I was surprised how little they barked. Son's never barks at anything- she's mute, for all I know.

We have a Pomeranian now- they're known for barking at everything (our last one did- never did figure out that I belonged there)- but present one is pretty quiet, too.
 
Yes, it is all in the training, and some dogs like people are easier to train then others!
Did not help we have 3 young boys, makes training a lot harder for a dog that is not easily trained.
Our Standard weighed 45 lbs and was strong, wily and a sly devil.
We put opaque film over the bottom half of the windows so she could not see outside. She learned to push a chair by the window climb up and look over the film. Whenever you opened a door, if you forgot to first turn around and command her to stay EVEN if she was no where in sight, she would "magically" appear and without a sound bolt out the door and run after them pesky squirrels.

Hey, I had a Collie when I was a kid. Dam good dog that needed very little training. Barked at strangers, greeted family and friends. Walked without a leash about 10 feet in front of you. You stopped , she stopped. To me, that's a dog.

These SS dogs need to be crated most of the time to keep them in line. I personally never understood the sense of having a dog that needed to be crated.

I love "never did figure out that I belonged there".

That was the part I could not stand anymore. Dog had no ability to discern friend from foe.

AND once she got excited by seeing a squirrel outside the window, forget it.

What was nice is the SSCA rescue people love the breed and took her with open arms, fully aware of the temperament and behavioral issues.

Frankly, hard to love a dog that barks at you when you come home like you are about to rob your own house. She never learned the sound of my wife's new car either. I could drive up and she would bark, but my wife drives up in her Pilot and the dog we go nuts. 3yrs dog could not discern much.

I am just so relieved I was finally able to get all to agree she had to go. Tried once over a year ago and kids and wife went the whole, "oh, how can you give up the do." Sorry, I knew it wasn't working and never would.

At least he found a good way to find the dog a new home. I suspect there wasn't a lot of effort put into the training when they first got the dog. Just cause you had a "good" dog in the past doesn't mean another dog will act the same way without a lot of dedication and work.
 
My sentiments exactly. My wife has two poodles that are quite as bad as your dog was, but still annoying. She tells me they're smart dogs. Well compared to a Pet Rock, yeah. ;^)
