OT. Change Making Rant

I do not carry change in work clothes and pay most smaller purchases with Visa. Went to local butcher shop to get some sausage. Bill with tax was $10.01 Gave the lady (owner) a $20 and she gave me $9.99, a $5 four 1's three quarters two dimes and four pennies. Yes my Great Grand Dad was supposedly born in Scotland. Anybody experienced in making change? I think I will give her a pint jar of pennies.

Lol! sounds like her great grand dad was born in Scotland too, and the strain bred true!

Little Scottish boy gets a dollar for his birthday from his grandfather. He runs down to the candy store, has them change it into quarters. Runs to the toy store, has them change the quarters to dimes. Runs to the bakery, has them change the dimes for nickels. Runs to the grocery store and has them turn the nickels into pennies. Runs back to the toy store and has them change half the pennies into nickles and the other half into dimes. His grandfather sees this and asks him what he's doing. Little boy says "sooner or later, someone will make a mistake in the change, and it won't be me!"

IMHO.....pennies are a hassle.....BUT

I fear if we allow the start of removing our currency....even with the penny....we will wind up using euro's or some other foriegn monetary system......

LONG LIVE THE DOLLAR!!!!

Heckiva thing, but most merchants here used to have a "penny dish" at checkout so either clerk or customer could grab a needed penny or two or leave same, but certain stingy sobs thought it was their personal piggy bank and clean it out completely ta help pay for their cigs/lottery tickets, alky. Most places now cull the dish and only leave 3-4 cents..others going into charitable donations/cause jars.

Why didn't you just straighten her out, and tell her how to make change, I do it all the time when ever it happens. easy fix for me,,, but for some, have to Rant some,,,,

What seems to be the problem? I added it up three times and it seems right to me.

I saw one of those dishes yesterday at a restaurant. It said "If you need a penny, take a penny. If you need two pennies, get a job."

This would have worked- when she didn't just hand you back a ten, I'd have told her I didn't want all the change, so hang on a second while I go out to the truck to get a penny. She'd have said "Forget it" and gave you a ten.

Sounds like you got the correct change, something the lady should be recieving praise for instead of fussing about it. If it had been a teen or 20 something clerk they most likely wouldn't have had the sense to do it and you'd have gotten screwed with too little change. If they were expected to make their till exact, so the books would balance, they would have had to pocket the extra. Most small businesses, and it is the owner of said business in this case, like their books to balance when they do them and I guarantee you they aren't staying in business by cheating themselves out of a penny or by keeping their customers change either one. If you figure a penny a day for say a hundred customers, over the course of a month, over a year and they'd be cheating themselves out of more than $360 a year. Not a very smart move in my book.

That said what does it say about the state of this country when people 'dislike' our monetary system so much they start fussing about getting the proper change. Any other time I guarantee you'd be fussing if you got to little change but here I guess you got to much, and I guess it's because you don't like pennies. Personally I've never had a problem charging every cent of what something cost me or expecting to get back every hard earned cent owed to me. That's just good business all around. Oh well, to each his own..........

I don't see how this qualifies as a rant. Quite the opposite actually. How can you complain when you received the proper change? It's not up to a store to provide with change and it's certainly not their problem that you don't carry any change. If she would have handed you back a pile of dimes to make the $9.99 could have qualified as a rant but what you posted can't even be considered a complaint. A store eats a penny or 2 and they get a hundred customers a day, it adds up fast.

A lot of places I've been, in a situation like this, they have a container next to the register with a little change in it... if you don't have a penney they take a penney out of the container...

Anytime I'm given change, I pick out the penny's,
and tell the gal to save them for the next guy who might need them.

OK, you've kept us guessing long enough... exactly WHAT is your beef with getting correct change, do you NOT expect to get correct change???

What's so difficult about carrying a little change in your pocket? I always empty most of it into the fun money dish, but keep a little in my pocket for just that reason, if the bill is just over an even dollar, I'll toss in the odd change, if you don't you just have that much more change- pretty easy solution- if there's a problem, it's a self-generated one

I think he was just expecting the clerk to give him a $10 bill back and he's ticked there wasn't a little jar of pennies there. Still can't see how it classifies as a rant. A more appropriate rant would be from the store clerk complaining about all the people that want the bill rounded off to the nearest dollar when it's a couple cents over.

At least you got the right change, no hassles. Sounds right to me.

2 years ago I went to the local Taco John's, ordered my meal to a newer clerk kid. Paid and took a step away, the manager/owner lady stepped up, asked him what I ordered, and said the ticket didn't look right. So she went through it, and was the wrong combo; and my cup of cheese sauce was ringed up as a chicken extra somethingorother. I was glad the manager was catching it early.

Then she starts figuring up the price difference, and I was thinking well pretty close to what this normally costs me, just keep the diff. When she looks at me and says that will be 13 cents extra.

All the while customers were building up behind.

Now, here too, she was correct so I'm not complaining, but it seemed odd she would hold up business and have me fiddle around for 13 cents and ring up a new slip (3rd one as she went through all this!) when it was their mixup....

But then a couple months later, went in to order about the same meal, the next new clerk says they don't have a small pop cup ran out can he give me a medium cup. Well, sure. (Not like I'm gonna use my hand to dip the pop up, I'd need a cup don't you think????) After I got the meal with the slip on the tray, the snot charged me for the upsize!!!!!

Haven't eaten in that place for over a year now, and used to go in a couple times a month.

Giving you exact change - well, that's the right thing for her to do isn't it? I've been known to buy something to _get_ change, need it for a newstand or pop machine or some such - then I'd be ticked to get a $10 back! She doesn't know which way you go on that sort of thing, so from her side of the register, she sure did the right thing?
