Need help getting swapped Contential TM20 started

Swapped motors in my Case 1835C. It has a contential TM20 3 Cyl. Can not get it to start, all it does is backfires or afterfires, I don't really know. I am pretty sure the firing order is 1-3-2 with the #1 plug wire to the post on the cap marked #1. The next spark plug, being #2, I skip the post to the right of #1 and connect to the next post on the dist. The #3 plug then is plugged into the post between the #1 plug wire and the #2 plug wire. Is this correct? Can any of you help me get this started? I have checked the timing by putting my hand over the #1 plug hole and turned over under I felt air push my finger of the hole. I can not see the timing mark on the flywheel as it is so rusty, but it is to be set at 2 degrees before TDC. I should have looked at this before I took my dist out of the old motor, but forgot. Please, I'm desperate.

You are CORRECT on the 1-3-2 firing order. When you determined #1 TDC by holding your finger over the #1 sparkplug hole did you verify if the rotor was then pointing to the high-tension terminal marked #1 and the points has JUST begun to open?

(Someone MAY have installed the distributor in a non-standard position.)

Once you determine that the distributor position is CORRECT, arrange the wires in firing order, in the direction the distributor turns. (Not sure which way that is, but easy to verify by observing the rotor's rotation with the cap off while cranking the engine.)

Got her going, just had the plug wires crossed and the timing off some. Thanks for the help, was getting nervous last night. Just needed to walk away from it for a while and think about it. Thanks for the help.
