OT Engine Oil Options!!

I haven't been on here for a few months and maybe some one else has already asked the question I want to ask.

What brand of engine oil do you use in your vehicles and equipment?

I've always used Valvoline for years but have recently switched to Pennzoil! Thinking of trying synthetic oil...

I run Valvoline in my pickups. Everything else, lawn mowers, tractors, combine, grain truck gets John Deere Plus-50 15W40. I used to be a Mobil Delvac guy but when the local Mobil dealer closed up (retired) I went to Deere. I take my empty drum up there and they fill it from their bulk tank. It is priced real reasonable that way. If I had to buy their oil in 1gal or even 5 gal it would be WAY too expensive. I have always ran Valvoline in my trucks (because Dad does) and you can't beat the price old Wally World has on those 5qt jugs. In the end, I imagine all oil is about the same, just different label. As long as you change it regularly and use a good filter, I think they are all fine.

Run oil from Lubrication Engineers in my service truck, and recommend it to all my customers for use in their equipment because I've seen first hand how good it is in engines seeing daily, hard use. My other vehicles get NAPA branded Valvoline.

I try to use Conoco 15w40 in everything I can. By the drum its by far and away the price leader at my supplier. About the same as everything else if I buy it in baby bottles. A lot of the truck and bus fleets here have gone with it. Right now its in all my diesels and an old car. My gas pickup gets 5w20 synthetic because Ford says to and its under warranty. Other car gets Pennzoil because thats where I took it to get it changed. Small engines all get Napa brand synthetic.

By the drum the Conoco worked out to 6.99 a gallon.

Was looking at Rotella 15/40 for diesel yesterday at TSC and I think it was 12 or 13.99 a gallon. Right next to it was TSC's brand, 15/40 Harvest Brand(I think) and it was on sale for 9.99 a gallon. I turned both cans around and they both had the same API ratings on them. Wonder who makes TSC's oil? I suppose they have the zinc and other stuff in them to use with flat tappet cams. ohfred

I used Pennzoil 10-40 in my 1984 Ford 250 - 460 Cu. for 120,000 no problem. Had a 1997 and 1999 F150, 5.4 L 130,000 on each used 5-30 Penz no problems. Just traded in a 2001 F150 Super crew with 5.4 and 198,00 miles - 5-30 Penz. None of the motors used any oil at all. They stayed right at the full mark. I can remember just one time i added 1/2 qt oil to the 2001. It was after a very rough country hunting trip I think the severity of the terrain had a lot to do with the oil use. Always change oil every 3000 and used Super Tech filters most of the time. Had used a few Fram if the Super tech weren't availible. Just got a New 2011 F150 Super Crew with the 5.0L, going to use the 5/20 or 5/30 penz in it.

If you go synthetic make sure it is a true and full synthetic or you will be wasting money! A good synthetic will allow extended drain intervals which will actually save you money and time. I run and sell Amsoil so I am biased but really the best two full synthetic oils are Mobil 1 and Amsoil. I beleive Mobil 1 allows you to extend drains to 12k while the Amsoil will guarantee the oil to last at least 17.5k/35k city/hwy driving for its best gasoline oil. Want to know more email is open.

Unless the equipment is modified and undergoes more stress. Or is operated in extreme heat/cold. Just use Shell Rotella.

I agree on Rotella. I have been an Amsoil dealer since 1974, but modern oils are so much better than the "old" oils I don't dwell on synthetics anymore.

The other thing that matters as much as the oil is a GOOD filter. Not a cheap Fram, but a WIX or if farm equipment the OEM is OK. DOUG
