Todays work place

I started working a month ago for a large home improvement chain in a distribution center, I enjoyed the work and the people I worked with. Had just recieved a 30 day review and was told the company was happy with my preformance ect. The company is restructuring and has been unstable in my work enviornment, taking work away from the shift I was hired to work in order to improve effiencey, in theory. Two days ago I recieved a call for an interview with another company where I had applied at the same time. I took the job for added pay and more stability. Today I went in to the HR office and gave notice and was tood I could continue working, when leaving the office I was asked in an informal conversation where I was going to work, told the man and was promptly forced to resign. Makes it so that a guy doesn't enjoy being honest. The attitude I encountered reflects the general attitude of management in this facility (say one thing and do another) that I worked under, guess this explians the high turn over rate this company can not understand.

Happens all the time. 20 yrs ago I was working at adealership and got the job I have now working on a private fleet. When I turned in my "2 weeks" notice they asked if it was for a different dealership. I said why and they said if it was you're fired right now.

I was in a similar boat back just after new years of 08. I had seen the writing on the wall at my job, so I got a job at another machine shop. I gave my 2 weeks and worked that night. Next day I came in for my shift and was fired on the spot.

I filed for unemployment, and got it. I had my other job lined up and could have gone to work imediately at the other shop, but didn't feel like it. Worked there for 3 months, didn't like the atmosphere (brother died, not so much as a card) so I went to a pattern shop where my former supervisor at shop #1 went to. (We quit on the same day) Worked there for 5 months, got fired for butting heads with the owner's butt sniffer, and now have been gainfully employed at the same shop for about 2 1/2 years, and love my job.

Yup had a "kid" who just out of high school started working with us and stayed for 6 years even under a supervisor he couldn't stand(I can't either). He gave his two weeks and was told to keep them and get out now! Boss said he and anyone from that area had no loyalty. I've been there 12 years another has been there 16 years another has been there 10 years, and another one who just quit had been there 12+ years, no loyalty huh? Also we have had 3 people quit this year, maybe 4 pretty soon mostly in large part of the "supervisor". I guess we know who is more important here

in Jan 2011 was told on a thursday that we had a meeting on tuesday. come tuesday they said they were eliminating my position after 32 years. boy the job market has changed in 32 years...aint no more company to employee loyalty, you just a number to them.

It's none of their business where you're going to. If you gave notice and they told you to leave, they have to give you pay in lieu of that notice.

Good for you Donovan. It's refreshing that other people have realized there are some poor bosses and places to work. It's hard to be very motivated when you wish you didn't have to show up in the morning or worry about what kind of mood the boss is going to be in. Sadly a lot of bosses feel more important when the brown nosers suck up to them. I like it when the bosses put the brown nosers in their place. Especially liked it at one place where 2 bosses took care of a self important $hit disturber. The guy was laid off just before a new owner and new manager was taking over the company. The trouble maker was called back to work about 3 weeks later. The day he came back the new manager was getting a tour of the shop with the new owners. They called all the employee's and introduced the new management. Then this idiot goes up to the new manager, proudly proclaims who he is and how far up he'll stick his head. The manager said hi but the look on his face after was priceless! He continued walking and kind of shook his head. All the other employee's were bursting at the seams trying not to laugh out loud. It was freakin hilarious!!!

we try to do our best regardless how lousy company is, [we have morals standards, even though companies don't] if we have a new job opportunity, we want to give notice, when a company fires you, they give you 30 second notice. we are just a number in the payroll computer.

That's pretty common. At GM, if you are leaving for another auto related company, you are escorted out of the plant immediately. Your supervisor and security would go thru your desk, and Fedex it to your home. No coffee and cake for the "traitors". Some mid management types resigned "effective immediately", to get around this. Always to pursue "other opportunities".

I believe I can read between the lines here and figure out you were working for the one of two big box stores so called home improvement stores. And they didn't want you working for the competitor. I hear it all the time from my old Air Force buddies who work for them. Can't say I blame them for asking you to resign but the way they did it was a bit uncouth.

You need to leave them a little "going-away" present, since they're so darn smart- File for unemployment. Assuming you go to work at the new place in 2 weeks, you'll only draw for one week- but your old employer will get his rate bumped up, for 2 or 3 years.

In law firms, general practice in firing someone (or when he gives notice) is to have a security guy in the guy's office when he comes back from the firing- with cardboard boxes. They box up his personal items, escort him to the door, get his key, and he's gone. But there's a good reason for it- if he stays for 2 weeks, lots of client files will get copied, and the clients will go with him to the new firm. Nothing to prevent that anyhow, but they're not going to make it any easier, or give the guy time to bad-mouth them.

Of course, the smart ones do the file copying before giving notice.

The company I work at is the same way....Several have given them a 2 week notice and they were promptly walked to the door...Its a slap in the face to them if you quit...They are so cocky and arrogant..Half the people that work there hate their jobs..

I always told the kids - bad bosses teach you how NOT to treat people when you become a boss yourself.

I only had a couple people who didn't like working for me, but lo and behold - they just didn't like working.

For anyone. . .

Be glad you're seperated from those people.

A friend had worked about 30 years when the company was sold. He was getting 5 weeks vacation. New policy was 2 weeks maximum so he quit. When they asked if he was gonna give a notice he told 'em sure, "Here's the 3 weeks you screwed me out of".

> I was asked in an informal conversation where I was going to work, told the man and was promptly forced to resign.

Forced or asked? If you give 2-weeks notice and you're asked to resign, just tell them to fire you.
