Behlen Power Steering

I have a 450 Farmhall. We took the power steering pump off to replace a headgasket. I put the powersteering pump back on and it only turns to the right now. When you turn it to the left it's like manual steering. We never unhooked the hydraulic hoses or anything to the pump. When I use the loader to lift the front end of the tractor up the power steering works fine. As soon as I put weight back on the front end I have no steering to the left. Does anybody have any ideas what the problem is?

stev is that an add on behlen system? did you dis connect the torque generator from the steering shaft? on the char -lynn torque gen there is a neutral position for center steer. you may need to disconnect the lower steering shaft from the torque generator, start the tractor, let it idle, then turn the steering wheel full left then full right and let it return to center position. then set the front wheels to center and re-connect the steering shaft.

Yes that is an add on Behlen System. I'm not sure what you mean by the torque generator. I'm assuming it is the pump itself. I removed the pump from the steering wheel end and the end that goes to the steering sector. So the pump was free and clear of the steering column and I just laid it aside to be able to get the head off. I did not disconnect any hoses. I just put it back together as it was. The shafts could have been turned while I had it off, so I guess you need to explain to me what neutral position for center steer is. thanks for the response.

the torque generator is basically a hydraulic
assist motor, like the power steering on a car. it uses either a belt driven pump off the engine, or taps off a live hydraulic pump via a priority flow valve. the behlen usually uses a pump driven off the distributor drive and hoses connect to the torque generator that is spliced in the steering shaft. when the steering wheel is turned one way or the other, hydraulic fluid is diverted in the torque generator to give assist to steering effort. there should be a point in the steering where the torque generator "idles" it neither assists to the left or right, and at that point the front wheels should be pointed straight forward. what i suspect is either the steering shaft on the torque genny was turned, or the tractor front wheels, and the hydraulics are fighting your direction when you turn the wheel. you will need to find the "center point" and then connect the steering shaft in the wheels sraight forward position. i have the char-lynn manuals on my computer at the shop, if you want a copy, shoot me an email and i will forward them to you.

Take a look at the Behlen power steering on "Old John" Nancy"s 48A.

The pump has a shaft coming out both ends, one to the steering wheel and one to the steering sector up front. Which shaft is the one that needs to be at center point? thanks.

What you are calling the 'pump' is the torque generator, as others have said. It is the unit that gets pressure from the actual engine driven pump(most likely) and generates the 'power assist'. The 'center' position of the torque generator needs to synched with the wheels set straight ahead and then connect the shaft.
