curious on odd crop rotation

Just curious as to why some, even very large farmers will grow winter rye on poor ground for four years, and then out of the blue plant corn, then go back to winter rye for 4 more years. Seems like an odd rotation.

what a day - anyway, the rye puts nitogen back into the ground. If disc'd up in the spring- works like a green manure. Also holds soil in place while you are giving that piece of land a rest.

Never been close to MN and rhy not grown around me. That said I would guess that it is a disease problem with the rhy that after several years it builds up to much to keep on going and that puting in corn breaks up the cycle. Corn probably does not yeald as many dollars as the rhy and the reason only done that often.
