Radiation suits

They say the workers are fighting the meltdown without proper protection. Wouldn't suits be part of a nuclear plant?

Suits and self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA"s) would probably be the only way to be certain, but I doubt that they can fit enough people that way. Even with suits the radiation poisoning is going to happen.

If it"s gamma radiation they would need lead suits, don"t think anybody makes them, as far as alpha and beta radiation, that"s what the coveralls and masks are for. I think they"re giving their lives to save the rest of the population.

Unless you have access to Star trek technology. Rad suits only stop ingestion and inhalation of airborne gasses and particulate. Along with shilding from Alpha and most Beta radiation.
Shielding from gamma requires distance and/or thick layers or dense materials.
Neutron which are produced from a nuclear chain reaction when a source has gone critcal. Neutrons are best shielded with water or oil in combination with dense materials.
If the reactors had been Candu's instead of BWR or PWR's with enriched fuel. The overheating would not be occuring at all in the used fuel bay.
The reactor core would have so much shielding, a vacuum building and stored gravity supplied cooling water. That over heating would not occur for weeks without power.

Those suit are only to keep the dust off the skin and to keep a person from inhaling the radioactive dust. Have you ever picked up one of those vest in an X-Ray dept of a hospital?? A suit that would help a person would be a few hundred pounds and still only protect for part of what a person was getting. There are 3 form of radiation Alpha Bata and Gamma and the last of the tree is what causes the greatest problems and is the hardest to slow down or stop. Former Nuc sub sailor so we had to learn this stuff

I agree..........better to use Tesla's or Newman's ideas/products. Why pay for something when it can be had for free.............

You guys never had to dodge a neutron?
Short lived, long lived contamination and nobel gasses also tweak the dose calculations.
Airborn tritium is a dose factor here.

Do not desecrate the fine name of Nikola Tesla by equating him to Joe Newman. Tesla was an engineer. Newman is a crackpot.

The Federal and a couple of Provincial governments here are dithering about building new ACR-1000's. Up coming election, trying to guess which will gain m,ore votes.
They should be building the advanced 1000's now.

may all be needing NBC suits here in a few days...

you'd figure a country that had been nuked' twice within recent history would know how to handle radiation..

I hope the best for them.

at least it wasn't a primitive graphite pile reactor...

On the U.S. sub they said we got less radiation when on the sub then we did being out side on a nice day. There is some much shielding on them that the only way you could have a problem is if some how the reactor got opened up but that was not likely to ever happen. If civilians ran reactors like the Military there would be a lot less problems but I can not explain it better due to a gag clause from when I was in the Navy. As in open my mouth and go to jail

Sure,,, I worked in a Nuclear weapons plant and Alpha is the one that kills you the fastest,,,, it is air born particles...

Joe is just going on from where Tesla left off. Tesla did a lot with electricity but admitted he didn't know what it is or was. Joe goes in great detail to explain what it is in his book. If you can explain what it is, lets hear it . If not read the manuel.

Then the airborn alpha which was stuck in your lungs ends up being coughed up and swallowed. To give all your innards a dose.
Yet alpha on the outside of the body is the least harmful.

Nowdays there is so much info on the net and general nuclear knowledge. There isn't a whole lot about a complete 35MW PWR power plant. With demin production, breathing air, ballast air, backup power both battery & diesel, prop dives etc. That is supposed to run nearly silent while crammed into a 200ft long 30ft dia tube. That can't be figured by putting 2+2 together.
Just hope a steam leak never develops.
Batteries, demin water and diesel make excellent rad shielding.
The new all electric boats are nifty.
