OT/Chevy Equinox

This problem started a couple of months ago. The car slows down from speeds as usual, but when it is almost stopped (less than 5 MPH) the brakes feel like the ABS is kicking in and the brakes nearly give way and the pedal pulses bad. There doesn"t seem to be any other noise (squeals, etc.) in the brakes. The car has 80K on it. I put new fronts put on about 5 months ago and the rears are good I don"t think this problem is related to pads, shoes, etc. I"m thinking ABS, but the ABS light does not come on when this happens. Anyone have a guess?

i have a 2002 2500 chevy truck i had to pull the fuse for the ABS brakes because when i went to stop brakes felt like they were not going to work. had the same problem with my 2000 tahoe to i took it to a friend it was covered by GM the problem was the speed sensors.

I haven't seen unwanted ABS activation on the Equinox, but on C-K trucks rust builds up under the ft wheel speed sensors pushing them away from the tone ring. At slow speeds the signal drops out and the ABS module interprets it as a locked wheel. Removing the rust on the trucks fixes the problem. With the Equinox, you might want to take a ride in it with a scan tool hooked up and watch the speed sensor data and see if it has a signal dropping out. That would point you in the right direction.

I think there was a recall for my 01 truck, something about corrosion on the wheel sensors. Is your Equinox exposed to salt so could it be corrosion?

Yes, it"d exposed top salt. My 2000 Silverado had that recall. I"ll give the sensors a try. thanks guys...

My '01 did the same thing. My dealer informed me there was no recall, and they would not fix it under warranty. I pulled the fuse and put black tape over the idiot lights in the instrument panel. I never did like anti-lock brakes and this gave me a good exceuse to eliminate them.
