parasites?? Getting rid of them?

Hey folks,
We have about every piece of grass around town that people are tired of mowing. Some is fewnced and some is just cut and either made hay or fed fresh. One small place 50'x50' that I had fenced to just put a mare and baby on in spring and a horse to keep it mowed thru the summer has had strange horses on it. Long story but the guy that owns it (let me use it) wasn't home one day and some new folks in town with a couple horses asked his daughter if they could put their horses on it. She said yes and they put 2 horses ands a pony on the place when the ground was soggy. Pretty much riddled it and pooped everywhere. Sood as they took them off, I went and took my fence down.
FF a few weeks and the owner asked me what is wrong (didn't know about the strange horses). Told him and he said it wouldn't happen again.
Now, we worm our horses 3-4 times a year. Worm paste is real expensive here and usually overlooked by folks with a couple pets.
Is there something I can put on the place that will kill any parasites before putting our animals back on it? Lime maybe?
Not uncommon with the "pet" owners for a horse to sh!t spagetti.

Thanks for any tips,

Dave

(quoted from post at 15:17:23 03/15/11) plow it up and reseed or let it rest for a year

Not worth it. Grass will come back, just don't want to tqake a chance on the worms. Guess I'll just let them choke on it (mow it themselves).

Wow. We had horses for 20 years, never had a problem. We wormed the horses 2x per year. Never saw any worms. I just wormed our goats, going to do it again in 30 days. We used Ivesco medicated stuff. Looks like pelleted feed. Active ingreadient is "Morantel tartrate". Whatever that is. Horse's we alternated wormer's, as per the vet's instructions.

Ours are fine, just don't want them to pick up any riff raff. Had a friend show up one day with his GF and two horses. They dumped in the driveway and it looked like spagetti. Rn them off, cleaned up and spread lime on the area and don't allow strange horses/animals on the place any more.

We pay 2-6 bucks for a wurm paste, they pay about 50.

Not 100% sure Dave, but feel pretty good saying to use your chain harrow over it to break up any piles and let it sit in the sun for 2-3 months and it should be OK to put your guys back on. Keep it mowed short so the light can get to the surface.

YMMV,

Hay Dave, I think theres a wormer for horses called Quest gel, that is a one year dose. Im going by memory so look it up on your pc. I use Zimmectrin 1-3x a year for my old girls 1 at 32 1 at 31 and 2 at 27 seems to be ok for them. They also have daily wormer pellets from Continuex. As far as pastures, maybe harrow them to expose the dung to sunlight and kill any larve, or get some chickens, maybe they will eat the larve. J

Here in our climate you break up the dumps and let the sun work
on it for a couple of months. It also can help to rotate chickens or
other fowl onto it as they don't normally host horse worms and they
will pick apart the piles to get the worms out.
