Today after plowing I disked some plowed ground. As I watched the front wheels"push" and get thrown around,I realized that Iwant/"need" a 4wd assist. But I've never run one.Are they really that much better?Should I trade the 1256 off on a 1486mfwd?(I'm also ready for a quieter cab)Thanks ,Steve

Yes. My first was a big old Steiger. It was amazing where that would go. Now I have a NICE tractor. Magnum 7240. You might not like part of the name, but it's the right color!

I really like our case 4494. you do have alot better traction and ride than a 2wd - my struggle is that its only a 4wd - I'd like a FWA or a 2+2 type that I can use for row crops as well. I'm a small farmer- the upkeep on the 4wd is way more than 2wd.

Go for a newer MFD. I bought a mew Farmall 95 CAH a year ago and just ANGRY that I didn't do it 10 years ago.

The old "12" is still a good old tractor,its got over 20,000 hours(I've only owned it for 10 years).but its noisy(4" straight pipe),hot and dusty(and I have athsma).Its on its 3rd engine and TA.I'm tired of being"beat-up".

4wd will be amazing as far as how much it improves traction.

But, if your existing tractor's in good condition and you don't want to spring for big bucks, there's ways you could make your existing cab better. Heck, there's add-on A/C kits you can put in a Model A Ford- which is basically just a box on a chassis like your tractor cab. A little creativity could easily adapt one of those kits to your tractor. Add that, and a little dynomat sound deadener/insulation to the inside, and it'd be a whole different machine.

If you get a front wheel assist tractor you will kick your self for not doing it earlier. Worst mistake we made was buying a 2wd tractor as main machine a couple years ago 1st one we have had in 40 years what a step back realy miss the added pull you get. I recon its gives you an extra gear to get the job done but increases the turning circle. But we where pushed into a corner at the time and the price was to good to let it pass. Wont be making that mistake again on the look out now for a fwa to replace it

Some counties in the southeast are showing figures as high as 84% of NEW tractor sales being 4 wheel drive. That figure of corse is being puffed up by all the compact 30 / 40 h.p that everyone is buying.. In any advent you want be sorry. AND RED EVER YEAR THAT PRECENT OF NEW SOLD WITH CABS CLIMBS lAST TIME i LOOKED IT WAS AROUND 72% IN MY AREA.

They are totally different tractors. Night and day difference. Plus, I think a lower hp 4wd will out handle a higher hp 2wd in many conditions.

Red, Go for it I had 2wds for years. In 2002, I decided to buy a new tractor and was going to go 2wd. My wife said "you only live once" go for the whole enchilada. So I bought a CaseIH CX-70. It will do more with 70hp than my old 125 hp tractor ( not IH red) could do. I'd say go for a MX series to replace the 1206. But get a turbo, I do regret not having one. I should have bought the CX-80. Good luck!

Steve, it's nice to see dirt being turned, ground is still frozen is some spots here. By all means go for a 4 wheel drive I've 3 and wouldn't consider another two wheel drive for any purpose. It's like adding 20% more power.
