O/T, grass mixture to use for dairy pasture??

I have done a lot of seeding in my life, but normally it's turfgrass. Can anyone lead me in the right direction for a seed blend or mixture for pasture for dairy cows? Have one client that is going to have a couple milking cows he says and wants me to seed the pasture on the end of a fall chiseled row crop field. Thanks for the help.

As Tom said, location will affect your decision.
I'm in WI, and use a clover blend for pasture. Has mostly Marathon red clover, but also alsyke, ladino (sp?), and timothy... maybe one other type. I've also used a mix that replaced about 1/2 the clovers with alfalfa, but it was more expensive, and I rotate pastures every two years, so I went back to the clover mix.
For a quicker pasture, maybe try a cover crop with the grass/legume... oats, peas and triticale, etc. Winter rye makes a good, quick pasture, but it's too late for that now.

Most farm or feed stores will have a "pasture mix" that's well suited to your area. Around here, its generally a combination of orchard grass, perenniel rygrass and annual ryegrass. Throw in some fescue if its droughty.

Welter seed and honey, welterseed.com located in Onslow Iowa has all kinds of pasture mixes designed for dairy herd grazing, if you call them up they will tell you exactly which mix will grow the most forage in your area and give fertilization reccomendations.
