Deere 1020 won't shut off

I recently bought a 1970 Deere model 1020 diesel that was repainted, not fully restored. When the engine is running, and the key is turned to the off position, the engines runs for 20 or 30 seconds before turning off. This only happens when the engine is warm. If the engine is still cold, it will shut off normally when the key is turned to the off position. Also, the fuel gauge always reads full when the key is in the run position. If the engine is running with the key in the off position, the fuel gauge reads full until the engine quits, then goes to empty when the engine quits.
Any ideas?

There should be just a single plug on the wire cluster in the back of the switch. What happens if you lift the battery cover and pull that plug off? If it quits when you pull that,I'd think the switch is bad. If it keeps running,I'd think the solenoid on the pump.

It keeps running. I'll look into replacing the solenoid.
Any idea about how to get the fuel gauge working?

Could be a bad ground. Take the sending unit out of the tank, hold it against something metal so it's grounded good, then move the arm by hand and see what happens to the guage.

I did that last summer. There was no difference. I wonder if the wiring is hooked up incorrectly. There is not a block that the wires fit into, just individual wires attached to the terminals on the back of the gauge.
