Scrap Iron Monster

With the price of scrap iron so high there are many old tractors and even more equipment being cut up and hauled away. I stop by our local scrap dealer about once a week just to see what is being cut up and I always leave sick at my stomach. It's shocking what people will sell for one more dollar.

I occassionally wax nostalgic when I see some good stuff in the scrap yard but I'd also rather see something scrapped as rotting out in a fencerow somewhere. Right now I've got an 850 Case dozer that just needs a little bit of work to make a good farm machine. I'd gladly sell to a someone who collects and restores but when they wont offer half scrap price I cant see the point. If it runs I think scrap price plus 10 percent is fair but no takers so far.

Hay man be carefull what you sell your scrap for.. Just sighed a 100 ton contract this morning for 17.5 cents a lb or a better way to put it $ 350.00 a ton. Now granted not everbody getting that for raw farm scrap but all of a sudden it is up big time. Dosen,t here that we have a semelter right here close by. Takes a lot of scrap to keep it going. I know everbody thinks it is going to China but this place melts over a 100 truck loads a day of old scrap.

The city where I live has a foundry moving here so I expect scrap to go up even more. Last one closed years ago so everything has been shipped out when sold.

What urks me is the amount of scrap that is being sold that has been stolen. I'm still wondering what became of my salvage car that was stolen? No word from the police after several years so am pretty sure I'll never hear a thing.

Well there's a good reason much old iron is going to scrap.Collectors are cheapskates.Example I had a pickup the scrapyard said they'd give me $450 for, could have been fixed up without too much effort. So I advertised it and stated in the ad that the scrappers had offered $450 so I'd take bids starting at $450.Got a bunch of low ball offers and a few beggers that wanted me to practically give them the truck so they could
'preserve' it.Got tired of listening to their BS and hauled it to the crusher. The same afternoon a guy comes by and flashes 3 $100 bills and says I bet this buys the old truck I flashed the $450 and said nope but this did.Got a couple old tractor skeltons not going to hassel with advertsing them.

You can add this to you list, my friend has 2 Bay City cranes he wants to haul to the scrap yard. They must weight alot, as there big.
Id like to just have the metal tracks for scrap! He also digs out bad metal gas tanks from gas stations and takes the tanks to the scrap yard, buried treasuse I guess.

Some of these comments remind me of the old fellow I new several years ago. He said, "Son, if they wasn"t but one old doe deer left in this country and I could find her, I"d kill her." So I guess if there was one piece of old iron left in this country somebody would sell it to the scrap man.
