The starting gear on my starter has been starting to act up. After I engage starter it sometimes sticks back and wont engage again b/c it must slam back to hard and gets wedged. Any thing to help it from getting wedged back??

Remove starter and clean drive with spray carb cleaner, then lube with a little powdered graphite, NO oil!

If it's obviously beat up or cleaning doesn't help, replace it. (The drive.)

are you running 6 volt or 12 volt ? just got bashed on the farmall forum for asking the guy why he needed 12 volt to start his A . 12 volt is hard on the bendix gear as well as the ring gear due to the rotational slamming in of the bendix. 12 volt starters have a solenoid and the drive is pulled into the ring gear and then the starter starts rotating.much easier on the ring gear and drive. just giving some info about what happens , but this guy had no facts for his claim.

Do what bob below indicates. THe washer and ring that stop the retract motion of the pinion might be worn and wedging. Look it over well and improvise a better washer combo if it seems to be the issue. Keep it thin enough to allow the pinion to retract out of the FW or it will be a problem. Jim

Starter drives do wear out,its best to replace them when they act up.oil on starter drives should be cleaned off with kerosene.
