It is a sub soiler. It is similar to a ripper bar on a doser in that it rips up the hard soil below the top soil. This (it is thought) allows better drainage and soil performance. With no till farming, tillage like this is still done in some soil types, but not annually. It is a device that would be a tough pull for a 40 hp machine. Pulling it slowly behind a traction engine or early tracked crawler was likely.

Not a plow,a feild cultivator..crank set depth, springs are to let it give and ride up if you hit roots or rocks. trip rope type .tractor pull not horse pull, horse pull would have seat and levers.keep points good on it,if they get too worn you will start wearing off your shanks. nice to have I would like to have one. lots of folks use them for deep chiseling ground before planting here. made originally for breaking up soil compaction in feilds such as hay feilds and hardpan in crop feilds, and allowing fertilizer and water to penetrate farther into soil.many different names from different companies ..tillers,chisels,feild cultivators,,,not really a subsoiler it doesnt lift and break up the ground from underneath like a true subsoiler does.more or less like a row cultivator that runs deeper.very good for breaking up hardpan.

I had one something like that maybe a little heavier. I think it was a JD. It had 2 trip ropes. one to raise it and one to drop it. I paid $5 for it at farm sale. Every time I tried to use it my back would go out for 6 weeks. It was after that I figured out why bug time operators all have hydraulic equipment, their workmans comp carrier probably requires it. I let my son take it in for scrap.

looking at the points, they look like chisel plow points. a sub soiler point or disc or v ripper point look a lot different, more like a tooth of an excavating bucket. the spacing set up on the shanks are a little odd, looks like possibly at least one is missing. how deep will the points go in the ground? interesting looking implement.

I loved your comment, and my husband did too. He show everyone the pictures and says it horse drawn because it has a single tree. Thanks Libby

The plows go about 14 or 15 inches deep, the way it is set. It will choke down the super M pulling it. The crank is stuck and we are trying to get it lose so we can take it out of the ground a little,
