For whatever it's worth, diesel took another 15 cent jump, that's 30 cents in a little over two weeks, now up to $3.60.

$3.89 here last Wednesday. Same day, gas took a $.45 jump.

Looks like the big oil companies are helping the economy rebound, starting with their own pockets, as usual.

Diesel hit $4.10 a gallon here this morning. What are you guys whining about? Seeing fewer mighty diesel duallies on the road lately though.

I can't for the life of me figure out how a new diesel pickup would pencil out nowadays you pay a hefty price for the diesel option when you buy it, a gallon of diesel fuel is 30 to 40 cents more per gallon than gasoline, and the EPA has completely ruined their fuel economy it ain't gonna be too long and they are going to go from being a yuppie status symbol to a doofus symbol

Going up to $5.12 a US gallon here tomorrow. How's that for diesel?
[($1Can = $1.02 US) x 3.8 litres per US gallon]

i just bought a nice used 3/4 ton diesel in the fall cost about 4,000 more than same condition half ton gas models are going for i do alot of tractor hauling is why i went with it just doing some penciling going back and forth to work im saving $20 a week in fuel the oil works itself out go farther between changes but use more plus its nice to have the extra power yes i paid more for truck but the abuse i put on them hauling think i will save money in long run or at least justify it yes the price of diesel is going up but so is gas actually here the gas goes first then the diesel, prices usually stay same distance apart

With all the information out there, it is difficult sometimes to find just what you"re looking for; but here"s a little something:

Crude oil costs are currently around $2.60+ per gallon.
Total Refining, Distribution, marketing - and PROFITS - comes to about $0.45 per gallon.
Taxes and government fees account for an average $0.48 per gallon of gas or $0.53 for diesel. (ranges .66 in CA to .26 in AK for gas, .76 in CA to .32 in AK for diesel)

Considering that Big Oil profits are included in the $0.45 - AFTER refining, marketing, and distribution; why do we blame the oil companies?

When you get right down to it; the biggest milkers of this cash cow are the Feds and States. THEY have nothing actually invested, so it"s all gravy, for them to spend (waste) as they see fit.

If Big Oil is "making so much off our backs" - can we grasp just how much the Feds and States make?

Even cutting taxes and fees in half won"t save us a whole lot - we need cheaper crude, or another way. Since our "other ways" are expensive and impractical at the moment, we need to find more crude.

Just paid $3.89 last night for diesel here on the left coast...just got my propane tank filled today; 186 gallons @ 2.85 per gallon. ouch.

I think your point is well taking. It's hard to point at anyone thing that is driving prices up. Part of it is speculation, how much is anyone's guess. Oil company profits seem on the surface to be enormous, but their return on their investment is not all that great. You are right about government "waste", but what else is new. Any glitch or threat to the crude production drives the world price up. If Washington would get off their lazy behinds and open up the country to drilling, you would see a decline in crude prices, but that's not likely to happen in the near future. Texas usually has some of the lowest fuel prices in the nation, but it still hurts at the pump when these prices take these hugh jumps.

and how much blue sky is in your figures for the crude price as a result of many greedy traders? Put blame where blame is due!

Aleuicius, in scanning your post, I didn't notice any mention of the tax cuts the govt gives the oil companies. I've always wondered if the taxes at the pump are equal to, higher, or less than the tax cuts given to them. Nobody seems to know. I've heard folks say that these tax cuts actually make the pump price cheaper. Maybe we ought to give them more. At some point, fuel would become free.

Just kidding. . .

I don't think there's a thing we can do about fuel costs, other than buy a wheelbarrow and a set of roller skates.

Paul

The price of fuel itself really doesn't bother me that much because I drive less than 5000 miles a year, but the cost of a loaf of bread just went up 10 Cents and a gallon of milk 15 cents and UPS just raised their rates again all because it all is carried by a truck. And on top of that Bernanke had the nerve to say yesterday that higher fuel prices wouldn't hurt the recovery. What turnip truck did he fall off of?

No 'lazy behinds' in Washington. BO Stated that under his policies energy will "necessarily skyrocket.

forgein companies are drilling 50 miles off the mainland USA and domestic drillers are not being issued permits.

Big government is the problem, not big oil.

Anybody remember 1979, that was the first real oil shock, when Jimmy Carter stood by as Iran fell and the middle east spun into total chaos for nearly a year, the 1979 price increases were 7 times the increases of the 73-74 Arab oil embargo. Now that Jimmy Jr. is Prez he is powerless and clueless as the region implodes, the increases in the last week are directly due to allowing Iran to sail carte blanche through the Suez canal announcing to the world that they will do as they please, instability of world wide supply equals run ups in price that would otherwise not take place. Farmers should understand better than anyone that it is not necessarily a shortage of something that leads to high prices it is the perception or fear of a future shortage, look at used equipment and farm land prices at the present time.

Fueled up just off of I-80 in Joliet, IL today, $3.78 per gallon. I think that Premium gasoline was about 20 cents cheaper. The guy fueling up on the other side of the pump and I were talking...diesel is a scrap byproduct of manufacturing gasoline, and by far the most expensive. We had no choice, keep pumping.

Mark

Joliet! Wait a minute, is that were Jake or Elwood Blues did time? They serve a great pepper stake there on Friday night! LOL.. J

Hes a complete idiot! When oil goes up, stocks priceses fall. "It wont hurt the recovery", bull, and he knows it.

================================================

Hardly.

Because it is a heavier hydrocarbon, diesel oil takes less refining than gasoline; in the past this made it less expensive than gasoline. But as air pollution controls have become more stringent, diesel oil must be refined to have a lower percentage of sulfur, making its refinement process more expensive. Although diesel has a higher energy output per gallon than gasoline, it takes approximately 25 percent more crude oil to make a gallon of diesel oil than it does to make a gallon of gasoline.
