When it says in the manual to grease once per season, there's a reason for that so don't give it a shot of grease every time you walk by it. I have always greased every zerk every 10 hours on my 750 Massey combine. Logic says if a little is good then a lot is better. WRONG Over the years I have been getting less and less travel on the variable cylinder sheaves. Last year I could not get the high speed I need for threshing wheat. Granted the belt was worn to the replace limit but that still did not explain why sheaves won't travel all there range. Took the pulley apart and found the tracks that the sheave runs it packed full of dried up grease and dust. It was packed in there harder then cement. Cleaned it out and gave it a light coat of lube. Put back together and new belt and it works better then it ever has. What have we learned here? FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS!!!!

Ya that is sort of like a friend on mine. He has a Skid steer and can not understand why there are no grease fitting on the pins for the cylinders. I keep trying to tell him think about what the machine does and what sand and grease mixed up would be like

Thats worse than the normal just blowing seals out of bearings. My MF has two bearings that are fitted with plugs because they are only to be greased every 1000 hours. From what I've heard most people never grease them and they last better than the over greased ones.

That's the kind of thing that keeps me in business. You'd be amazed all the times I've made repairs to a machine caused by undergreasing and probably just as many caused by overgreasing. Like another post suggested, when too much grease is used the sand, dirt, etc and grease together make a very abrasive mixture... Funny thing is it's not unusual to see both conditions on one machine owned by the same man.......

I learned that lesson when I was about real young (11-12?). I was greasing the mower and the old H and made it a point to grease everything - including the axle bearings on the H. Blew the seals out on both sides then got an arse kicking by my dad. That winter when we fixed the seals I was ready to kick myself all over again for all the work I caused.

Overgreased or NOT, sooner or later those ALWAYS get spun full of crap and need to be taken apart and cleaned up every 1500 hours, or so.
