making solid core spark plug wires

I'm redoing the ignition system on my IH 3414 tractor/loader with its BC144 gas engine and need new spark plug wires. The coil is a new 12V with internal resistance, points, not electronic ignition. First, can I use the modern carbon core plug wires? Secondly, I've bought solid core wire, ends and boots to make up a solid core harness. The ends, however do not have a contact 'tooth' that punctures the insulation to contact the inner wire. Is the insulation suppose to be stripped back and the solid wire soldered to the ends, or would the modern wire work just as well and is already manufactured to the lengths I need?

I always use the solid core wire. I strip the insulation back and fold the wire under the contact cap and crimp for a pretty reliable connection. Never had any problems.

Just strip the wires back a bit, bend the copper back over the wire insulation and crimp on the end. It will do the job just fine. You can go get carbon core wire if you like, The coil will not care. Its really only magnetos that must have solid core wires.

I have done it that way, but it is so much better when the connections are soldered.

I have had to replace a lot of carbon core wires. The carbon powder sifts out of the fiberglass strands, arcing starts and then they self distruct. These fake wires measure about 10,000 ohms per foot and Ive found many that read open.Just strip back and fold the wire under the connector.Solder if it makes you feel better.

You need to strip the insulation back and put the end of the wire and crimp it under the terminals. As far as carbon core or resistance wires goes, use them if you have an AM radio and you want to hear the programming. I've had the same carbon core wires on my CA for 15 years and Oliver 60 for 6 years. You only need the copper core wire for a magneto equipped engine.

The CC ones I have seen, the wire comes out a tad and then has a spot of solder, can't go past them for continuity.I hear the carbon ones are prone to fractures.
