neighbour and his dogs

Sad find yesterday. Neighbor's rottweiler that killed a dozen birds two years ago. The dog returned, after trying to tear one door off the chicken pen. It jumped the fence. Then wriggled in through the bird door.Seven dead, two torn up. My daughter is playing nurse with the cripples in the garage. Killed my fancy Ameraucana breeding stock that lays blue and green eggs.

Once a dog starts killing chickens, I don't believe they can be cured.

Our Chesapeake would protect our chickens. If we let them out in the yard, she would chase away any neighborhood dogs that came around.

Send them a bill. If they ignore, report to the sheriffs department. There is no difference in the dog killing your chickens or a calf. It is all a type of livestock that produces a product. The owner needs to be held responsible to keep the dog put up.

My friends dog killed some of his chickens. He tied a couple of dead chickens to his collar with baling twine a left them there until they rotted off. Dog never bothered the chicken again!..Even if it didn't work it would sure get your neighbors attention!

Sorry to hear about your chickens..
Down where I live it's a wasted call to call sheriffs department and all they'll say is to protect my livestock ie shoot the dog. 12 ga 00 buck.

I feel for you. Call the neighbors an have a value for the dead and maimed livestock. Yes poultry counts. They are liable for their dog"s damage. I would have shot the dog and then call them for damages. If they refuse find out who they have their home owners policy with. The insurance company will cover this. It is part of your basic home owners policy.

I had a bull damaged by a Rottweiller cross dog three years ago. He bit the bull in the ball sack. I shot the dog and called the owner and told him if the bull did not heal he owned the bull. He raised he!! about it. The bull got infected and the vet had to remove his scrotum. Turned a registered bull into a common over age steer. I showed his insurance agent the bill I had where I had bought the bull and the vet bills treating the bull. I had my check within a week.

Now any strange dogs are shot on sight. These city folks come out here and just turn their dogs lose. I used to let my dog run but he stayed home. These people these days are never home so the dogs go roaming. I keep my dog with me or in the shop.

When i see a neighbors friendly dog(s) on my yard i call him and tell him to keep them home or they'll be shot the second time.
When a neighbor has rothweilers or such and they show up here they get shot on sight first time around.I killed 2 roths,2 sheps and one husky so far.
I tell them so and expect them to do do the same with mine.
I got no use for a dog that won't stay put.

Before the owner showed up I took a moment and taught the dog something the owner couldn't seem to train his dog to do. How to lay down, stay and play dead.
Mrs b&d called the municipal bylaw officer (dog catcher) and he said "good, about time".
Got the first "S" in but the 2nd and 3rd "S" fell through. I believe SSS is the best policy but had to obey Mrs. b&d.
Another neighbour when they heard the news. They sent us a bottle of Chivas Regal as thanks.
County live stock loss evaluator is coming this afternoon. We will add the three geese and a dozen ducks that disappeared six weeks ago.
I had to leave for the youngest kid's hockey game so the eldest son was around. Dog owner waited until I left then he showed up with his snowmobile.Dog owner gently and respectfully dragged his dog home down the road. Blood and hair everywhere.
I would have never imagined a dog that size could have wiggled in through such a small chicken door.

Bison, you're punishing dogs for the bad luck of being owned by irresponsible owners. Punish the owner, not the dog. If you keep just punishing the dogs the problem will continue... as seems to be the case.

I have been in your situation a few times. Outcome depends on the dog owner's attitude.
Most likely the owner will want positive proof that "his" dog did the killing!
Or the owner will state he is very sorry and will make sure it doesn't happen again and may offer a SMALL payment for your loss.
On the other side---If you have not contacted the owner since this incident or the first offense--you would probably be better off to take your own actions and DON"T tell US--Your WIFE-or ANYONE what you did!!

We had some strays hanging around once. The state police told us that if they threaten our chickens or any livestock, we have every right to shoot.

That happened to me 3 weeks ago!!!! Remember??? The last encounter I had with the neighbor he was about to cry.I told him next time you will hear a shot and that will bet the end of it...seemed to work so far...no dogs.

I thought the dog had to be confined to the property unless taken for a walk on a leash so by shooting the dog you are allowing the owner to continue without responsibility.Hitting the hip pocket would soon bring them into line so the Ranger has to be involved if possible. Marvellous how many dogs are left on the back porch at night and are there come morning, and some farmer in the vicinity has sheep and calves dead in the field.
" He was here all night"

Neighbour didn't seem to learn two years ago. He paid out of pocket almost $500 for birds killed back then. His wife was angry with him then. I dare not imagine what that red head women is saying and doing to him now.
I had been keeping careful with keeping the birds fenced but the dog used a snowdrift to get over the fence.
I was surprised at how such a large dog managed to wriggle into the coup through a little bitty chicken door.
