One of life's little mysteries.

I have an electric stapler on my desk and a paper shredder beside my desk, both plugged into the same outlet behind my desk.

Sometimes, but not every time, when the shredder runs, the stapler will snap by itself.

It must have something or other to do with a voltage variation caused by the shredder running.

To plug one or the other into a different outlet would require running a cord across the floor, which I'd probably trip over, although I might just to experiment.

The staple must have some sort of sensor that detects when paper is inserted into it. My guess is the stapler is triggered by noise (electromagnetic interference) from the shredder.

As odd as what my computer was doing when I had dialup. I finally figured out the heat sink was plugged so it was overheating, but it would shut right down when I was online. If I just left it off,it would restart instantly when the phone rang. I could start it myself that way by calling my own number.

Randy your modem was set to bring the computer back up when it sensed a dial tone. It is set in the BIOS and can be changed.

Doesn't matter now. We cleaned the heat sink and took the dialup modem right out. Works fine now.

Try plugging them into an outlet strip with a transient suppressor.

Are they sitting next to each other? If so, try moving one.

Thats what I'm thinking. Seen this movie one time where they moved the headstones but built the subdivision over the graves...didn't end so good.

My advice would be to walk very slowly to the door, maybe even hum a song to make it seem natural, then walk outside and down to the main road, very slowly. DO NOT START RUNNING UNTIL HIT THE MAIN ROAD, because they built the whole subdivision and its streets over the graves. Hum, walk slow, at main road...RUN!!!
