You wonder why this country is so messed up. Went to a Stewarts Shop tonight to get the WSJ, woman working there was clearing the bread shelf off and putting the bread in plastic bags, I asked her what she was gonna do with it, as my cickens and cow would love it, she said it goes in the dumpster. Some homeless shelters can come and get it but they dont show up for it she said? So there throwing away bread in plastic, in plastic garbage bags. What a waste, I aslo saw a subway doing the same thing this summer with sub rolls. Whats with this crap that a homeless person cant eat it if its expired? I told my wife I dont feel sorry for any homeless person, f%$g em,, they choose to live that way, my donations will go to the anmial shelters, before any dam homeless shelter!

Maybe that's why it's in the plastic. So the homeless can pick it up from the "buffet" for themselves.

Ya, a homeless can creep up to a dumpster and take it and eat it, but there is alot of guide lines about donating it to a shelter it seems like around here. Im not just talking bread, Iv seen Hannaford people putting expired meat in the garbage.

Sure is, if it cant go to people, than sell it cheap or give it away for anmials. There is a Friehoffer in the same building as a subway here, subway throws away the rolls, were friehoffer sells anmial bread for $1.25 a bag.??? Half the time Friehoffer is sold out?

Outdated bread is easy pickin's for a fraudulent food poisoning lawsuit.

All you gotta do is take that bread in front of some witnesses, go home, make yourself sick, and you're a millionaire.

Don't laugh. It's going on right now:

It would be great if they could give this outdated food away but they can't. People are always looking for ways to take advantage of someone's charity and generosity.

It can be confusing. Here I sit with my belly full of barbequed baby back ribs, and we're trying to decide whether someone else deserves a meal.

Personally, I'm a softy. I've fed a lot of people, none of them starving, but we won't turn anyone away from a meal.

Money is another issue. I will feed someone before I just hand them money.

I know a guy who is struggling financially. He's in his mid seventies, and he shows up at McDonalds several times a week, right around 10 AM to pick up the unsold breakfast items. He's very humble, polite and discreet about dealing with the management. They give this stuff to him for free. I've got a lot of respect for the folks who are in charge of that McDonalds.

And if you're wondering - this guy held a job all of his life, behind a parts store counter. His wife developed a serious fatal illness and his insurance was inadequate. It took virtually all of his savings to care for her until she died. He was able to hang onto the house that his parents owned, but had to sell most of the farm land. Small acreage farm. And he won't accept a cash handout. Sez he's making it OK. Shares the free food with his old dog.

It's hard to judge someone you don't really know.

Thats totally different, and I respect the guy. What Im saying is if a supermarket has day old meat, bread, veggies ect, it should go to homeless shelters, anmial feed or compost. NOT IN THE DUMPESTER TO ADD TO THE LAND FILL.

Well put - everything we do these days has to have the threat of a law suit taken into consideration. Its sad.

What? Haven't heard of Senate Bill S510? I think that most here have, which means that no one here will so much as get caught giving your neighbors an apple or cherry from your tree, or a squash from your garden...

Homeless people and shelters didn't cause that. Then again, neither did stray dogs or cats. I think that we know who did.

What the world needs now, is more big government

I know a guy that dumpster dives all the time, aways telling me what kind of tastey things he finds. He has plenty of money for food, just likes to save it for other things I guess.

I don't think the homeless are making that choice to throw the food away. I've seen homeless people digging in garbage cans for food. Some homeless people you speak of fought in wars for this country and are mentally ill.

Many stores do that. For example, Wegmans is one. Do you have a Wegmans up your way. Even the hated and despised by the libs Wal Mart does it.

I understand your rant but the real reason the country is so screwed up sits in the oval office in D.C. And was put there by a bunch of mindless voters.

The real blame goes to the insurance industry. Like someone else said if given away even for feeding pigs etc. and someone eats it and gets sick then the insurance companies are out big time over lawsuits. So they make the stores throw the stuff out as a condition of the insurance in the policy. I used to go to different stores and pick up what they were throwing away (vegetables, breads, etc) to feed pigs but ,every store I know of has stopped allowing that out of fear of the insurance industry.

We need to go back to the old addage, "Give them a hand if they need it, but not a hand out."
Want to test who is working the intersections? Their signs typically say "Will work for food", or "Homeless Vet".
Offer them a job, they will either laugh, ignore you, or walk away.
I know that there are some that are real, but too many are living as well or better than us. They are just greedy and lazy enough to drop their pride and beg for money on a corner.
Some of the same ones that throw money at these crooks also keep the TV shopping channels in business.

Your coments about the homless gives the rest of us a very negative view of your good luck in life. Does that mean you or the rest of us are real smart, and better some how?

Those folks all have a story to tell. Perhaps some day you can have the opertnity to tell one similar.

I know several families hanging by a thread, and most had medical insurance. Two of the guys used to make ill coments about poor folks, and thought their health insurance was as good as our politicians. I respect both of them because they stayed at their wives side till the dim lights went completly out.

My sister died from breast cancer, and She and her husband had great insurance, they were double covered even. How could a double health insurance plan go wrong!

There is lille doubt in my mind that she would have taken her own life early on if she cold see where her family has went as a result of her long ill halth.

Her husband was a cop that used to feel uncomfortable making homless folks move out of a upper crust neighbohood. He can't say those words today without breaking down. He has recovered, and he sees to have a totaly different selection for verbal coments now.

He donates alot of spare time working at a Salvation Army. His hard tail political choice also changed. He still goes to the same church, but now finds it totaly different.

His favorite line is .....It is difficult to walk in a poor mans shoes when you have new ones in the closet.

For the record, my sister was well educated, and worked as a nurse about ten years in a big hospital when she noticed a lump, and sone cruption within the hospital medicare billing. She lost her job, but by then they had no money to sue.

She also comtemplated robbing a bank, then waiting for the cops to show up so she cold get mrdical care. The sad feelings she had to suffer to make a coment like that!

Their new house, and both new vehickles, boat, large gun colection, and all their student loans were paid off two years before what .....she called the expensive lump showed up.

She also made the coment that the hospitals wheelchair doors were extra wide so all their posesions would fit through them.

Tou may label me as a jerk, but I was always rhe jrtk on the playground when the bullies took on a under privalaged kid.

Amen.

I'm from Bristol, IN. of Elkhart County Indiana, where it has been devestated ever since the last time gas prices exploded and shut down the RV and mobile home industry, which never recovered and may never ever again, and with gas prices nearing $4.00, expected to hit $5.00, and foreign crude at $100 per barrel and rumors are flying that it may hit $200 per barrel, along with the president's executive order that bans drilling and exploration in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic coast, and congressional bills signed into law by our current president that blocks exploration for oil in ANWAR as well as shale exploration and drilling in Colorado and the rest of the continental USA...Elkhart County, IN. may never ever come back.

Middlebury, IN. in Elkhart County has a food pantry somewhere there that made the local paper because it got into trouble for either selling or giving away meats, luncheon type meats without a permit. They either sold or gave away non-perishables which was ok apparently, but when they began with the luncheon meats without having purchased the necessary permit from the county, generating county revenue, well, that was going too far. And the customers are those that can't afford the cheaper prices of even Walmart, and when that happens, one is down and out as far as luck goes. The customers of this food pantry are people that have lost their jobs through no fault of their own, who have been unemployed for an extended period of time, losing their homes, lost their homes, breaking up families, ruining families lives forever.

For the record, I am as conservative as they come, but I can also understand the plight of many, and as I pointed out below, Senate Bill S510 that is going to make it a crime, A FEDERAL CRIME, to so much as give away a piece of fruit or vegetable from one's orchard or garden to anyone including family members, neighbors, homeless, and everyone else, and no homeless or jobless persons created that bill, but I can name a whole lot of nitwits from Washington DC whom did.

Amen IOWA NORTHEAST, Amen.

What is this S510 bill? You cant gave your neighbor/ family member fruit or veggies from your garden? What about eggs, ect! Is it already in effect? Wow

Thank You for the complements. Few of us have ever had bad times. I doubt if any of us slept under a tarp last night.

One thing we must all understand to see the big picture is, ALL laws are made by the wealthy, and often by a certian skin color.

We also shold realize we have the best form of governmrnt money can buy.

One thing that makes me wonder is the impact of jobless folks not paying into thr tax role.

Unemployment benifits paid out do not reflect unemploment numbers. Once the benifits run out, it is assumed the folks have a job. What a smoke screen.

Yesterday we had EMS classes all day. and one issue was suicide awarness. They did not address the issue as far as helping them. Rather the class was more geared for us to not walking into a situation and harming ourselves.

Another issue brought up was some folks have no insurance, or have been down the insurance road before, and chose to die rather than burden their families with more debt. These folks also are a force against us wth nothing to loose. This is often confused with the words ....Golden years.

I expect a few coments from some clueless folks about all they have to do is ask for a free ride at our government hand out place. Our local coffee shop is full of retired farmers with coments as such. Most have their names in the EWG farm subsity records. For the last while a few select names have been thumb tacked to the bullitin board. It has been very effective keeping the bad welfare coments down.

A few while drinkig coffee have guys from south of the border working for peanut wages. One guy laughed about he had more critters per square foot in his rental house than he had pigs per square foot in his hog confinement building. He now is the farmer that drinks his coffee without coments in the corner booth. Things got out of hand, and out of place. The local slp house is next door, why not go there and beat each other smart?

On the other hand we have a few that abuse the system. It seems the unweded mother without a job or education is given a decent opertunity to become a tax payer if they choose to take advantage of it.

You choose, both sides exagerate, and always they are facts from a newspaper or something.

I have not read the official report, rather the condenced versions pointing both directions.

We must assume how white the house was in DC that is out to help us all. Grandpa always said ....just wait, one of these days they will pass somwthing besides gas in DC.

If it wasn't for the frivolous lawsuits that greedy lawyers encourage the insurance companies wouldn't care who gets the food.

The insurance side never crossed my mind, until others on here said that also. I looked at it as helping others or what ever. But ya all you see on tv is ads for lawyers! everybody is sue happy.

It's hard to condemn someone you know personally. You can't turn your next door neighbor into some group of "them" that "doesn't deserve to live because they don't respect life the way we do" as Major Burns said on "*M*A*S*H*".

The lawsuit theory are kinda out there; there are day old bread stores every where and around here are salvage food stores with some of the dates a year out.

I linked to a story about it in my post below, called it "What the world needs now is more bigger government". I've seen it brought up several times here over the past year. The link below is just one of countless on the internet. One can Google "Senate Bill S510" as well.
