Zach,

You may already know this but just in case check the Stewart-McDonald website for the Fiddle Kit Assembly Instructions download. Lots of good information there.

Hope it might be of use to you.

Did you in a past post say something about making Mandolins too ??

Like to see a pic of one of those.

I'm not sure if you mean me or 55 50 Ron, but I have made one mandolin a couple of years ago and i plan to make more someday. This is a simplified A5, I guess, since I didn't do any binding.

Thanks, I did get the PDF and it looks very helpful, especially the part about how to align the neck when gluing.

Is the mandolin body as critical as a violin body, in terms of thickness of front and back, to get a pleasing sound?

I think I complimented you on posting these before, but in case I didn't, that looks like very nice work.

Yes, in this case it is much like a violin but without the waist. There are three main kinds of mandolins that I have seen and worked on; the tater-beetle or nun's head(with a lute shaped back and flat top) the Army-Navy, which is flat on both sides and the archtop, which is basically similar to a violin except it has both a bass and a treble bar instead of a bass bar and soundpost like a violin. I think it has to do with the extra stress caused by having 8 strings instead of 4, but I don't know for sure.
