SA-200 welder

Need a little input from some knowledgable welders. A guy is wanting to sell his SA-200, on a trailer with cutting torches (no bottles).

He is asking $500 for it. The catch is that he hasn't run it since the late 80's and it is a hand crank welder.

Can you add a starter to it, I'm a little old to try to be cranking with a handle, or would it be worth more in parts?

look on the plate and see if what model it is. like 162 0r 163. Later ones can have starters. let us know.

i think for that price i would snaffle it up , and worry about the starter later. thats if its in running condition. pretty hard to find an SA200 for under 1500.00 with a starter. those continentals start easy by hand also.its like your getting a free trailer and torches.

i believe some of those use the generator itself as a starter motor...i got a old Army surplus generator that cranks that way...lots of solenoids and relays but it works good.
well worth $500. if you decide to pass let us know...if its close to me i'm interested.

You can add a starter to just about anything with enought time & ingenuity...question is whether or not YOU consider it worth the effort.

Do you know what the engine is? There's a version of the SA-200 with a Wisconsin VF4 air cooled engine (I have one), that I don't think ever had a provision for an electric starter. Its not particularly hard to crank start.

I believe Wisconsin did make an electric start version of the VF4 if you can find the right flywheel and a starter. Another alternative would be a starter/generator off a garden tractor, with a pulley mounted on the front of the engine. I have also seen pictures of one with a small briggs & stratton engine used as a pony motor, driving a v-belt pully mounted to the front of the engine.
