O/T Blizzard---NASCAR

More fun looking out the window at the blizzard here in eastern South Dakota than watching the Daytona 500. I'd rather watch paint dry!!! Back when I was a kid Fireball Roberts took a 57 Pontiac off the showroom floor, stuck his foot to the floor and kept turning left. Same with all Pettys. Any of you old timers remember how much fun it was to watch those old Hudsuns and early Oldsmobile V-8s compete?

Early to mid 60s were the golden days of it as far as I'm concerned. You could tell what the cars were back then, brand wise, and they didn't have all these foolish rules to make everybody EQUAL! What are they, racers or a kids soccer team?

On this subject though,on Speed Channel last night, there was a roast of Kevin Harvick. You didn't happen to see that did you? That was hilarious!

Was it Donnie Allison that took his car over the wall at Darlington back then? I liked his observation "When I came down I was in the grass, and I knew there weren't no grass on the racetrack."

You have a little more senority than I. I do remember Glen Roberts in his Pontiacs, 1960 or 61 then he switched to Ford for his last race. He was my favorite. The Hudsons were a little before my time. I stopped watching and paying attention after the rice burners entered. I don't shop at Home Depot either.

Fireball Roberts ! now that was a racer. think of how far he would have gone if he would have lived. we miss ya fireball. Bob

Just caught the begining and the end of the race today, guess I thought it was a good race. Winning Daytona at 20 years old and the car doesnt have a dent in it, I think that kids got potential. Had to laugh when he was burning around a corner to head to victory lane and a couple guys flagged him down and pointed him to the right direction.

Todays game was the new style racing---drafting. If you didn't havs a partner that you could talk to on the radio. Forget it. You didn't have a chance.

I call NASCAR freight train racing. They all run nose to tail. If anyone try to pull out to pass they go back wards. When the yellow comes out, Pit are closed for the first lap or two to all but a selected few. The race is won in the pits NOT on the track. WHY not just have a tire changing/ fueling contest and forget the rest.
I do not watch NASCAR. I used to when Petty and the late Model Chrysler Hemi's were kicking A$$ and taking name. The GM and FORD guy whined enough to pencil whip the Hemi's with the rule book when they could not do beat them on the track.

I think "Smokey Yunick" had them all beat. His undoing was that he was "too" smart and ahead of his time and NASCAR knew he would clean house if they let him run HIS cars the way HE had them set up. That was the start of the end. Build em all the same cuz the spectators don't want to see dominance! Specially from someone who won't kiss Bill France,s ^ss!

Glad to see I'm not the only one that feels this way about NASCAR. At 43 I can't say I remember as far back as some of you, but living not too far from what they are once again calling Charlotte Motor Speedway all my life, it's not hard to see the changes in the 'sport' as a whole. For me when it got away from being "Stock Car" racing where it was good ole boys with home modified cars and basically 'run what you brung' and turned into spend mega bucks on a car that was far from even being just 'modified' much less stock, I lost interest.....OH for the good old days of Richard Petty, Donnie Allison, Fireball Roberts, Dale Yarboro, and all the rest of the good old boys of the days when it was still NASCAR and REAL RACING.........

Smokey pretty much wrote the SB Chevy as far as I'm concerned. That guy could find and twist HP out of an orange peel.

But, in like '62 or '63 Junior Johnson ruled driving an Impala with the Mark II 427 BB that was the basis for the Mark IV BB Chevy that was introduced in the '65 Vette as the 396. Nascar let him race that engine that year, but banned it the following year because it wasn't production...yet. '65 for the 396, '66 for the 427.

I agree that the new NASCAR is crappy. I remember watching the old real stock cars being raced. We had a local track here that the guys would race the car on SAT. night and drive it to work on Monday morning. To get real fancy you would weld the doors shut and take the side glass out. Also if someone dissed you on the track you had a free for all in the pits after the race. Even in later years Dale senior would still knock your head off if you screwed with him. Can you see wussy Jeff Gordon getting his hair mussed??? LMAO

The "big" money ruined the sport. I wanted to throw up seeing Dale JR. setting there in his white shirt looking like some clone when he switched teams,YES clone not clown. I have not watched a NASCAR race in over twenty years because of the fakeness in it. I go watch the local dirt track guys a few times each year.

Yabut,

Aren't the crashes better now? Isn't that why people go to the races?

I'd like to see a race where only two are left on the track and the other 41 cars are hauled off to the junk yard.
