Engine Block Repair or Replace

I have a Case VAC that I am planning on doing an engine rebuild. When I bought the tractor a couple of years ago the block had been welded behind the carburetor. The weld had a pinhole leak that I fixed with JB weld. I pulled the head and the web between cylinder 2 and 3 is cracked at the top. What are your guys thoughts. Should I reuse the block or replace? I have been using this tractor the past couple of summers to mow with and besides using about a quart of oil every 4 hours it ran fine. I opened it up this weekend to access how far to take the rebuild and it needs new sleeves/pistons as well as the crank shaft ground.

If you had no problem with it before, I wouldn't worry about it now. You would be surprised at how many engines out there are cracked like that. I just put an 18-28 Oliver Hart-Parr together that is cracked between 1&2. I have seen many Allis WDs like that and they are still running with no problem.

If your going to do a true rebuild I would look at the cost of a short block over what it will cost you for parts and you might find you would be better off going with a short block and not have to worry about that crack. Me I would find another block but that is me and I do not like to take a chance on a cracked block and since your doing a rebuild that in it self makes it more of a thing that could come back and kick you in the back sides a year or so down the road

Those cracks at the top between cylinders will never cause a problem. Where you want to check real close is at the bottom of the webs. If they are cracked there, they will leak into the crankcase.

The cracks at the top will be sealed by the head gasket.

Complete Case Vac tractors around here will not bring $700-900. I have seen completely restored ones not bring $1500. You should be able to find a cheap block or even a complete motor reasonably priced.

interesting thing i saw several years ago was a VAC case with a bolt run through the block between the cylinders, man said the block cracked while owned buy his uncle, he was told it wasn't any good, he installed the bolt drawed the crack shut, it still was running many years later without any problem from the crack ,not to say that would be your case
