O.T. firearms question

Is there a place online that you can get a honest estimate of the value of guns. I have to sell some that my late son in law had accumulated before he passed away. Thanks for your help.

Don't know if you want to go this route or not or even if you have one close but a good friend of mine was able to sell some used firearms directly to Gander Mountain and seemed to be treated fairly. You could call and see if they would be able to appraise them for you and if there are not to many you could carry them in to the store. Any reputable gun shop could probably help you and may even sell them for you for a percentage. mEl

I think you would better off to contact one of your local auctioneers. Most of those guys know what firearms are worth, and they know how to get top dollar. They can also take care of the legal end of selling firearms.

Be real careful selling to gun shops. they will give you the lowest price they can no matter what the value of the gun is. Not going to mention any names, but a reputable gun shop in Sierra Vista AZ gave a woman whose husband was dying of cancer $500.00 for a number of guns ,any one of which was worth more than that.

Yeah, do the same thing in the "Gun Library" at Cabela's. Remember, that those are "asking" prices and I know for a fact that Cabela's will take 10% off any gun in the library they have has for over 30 days.
Also know that their markup is pretty stadard at 50%. That is if you walk in there and sell them a gun for $1000. You can go in there two days later and see the gun for sale at $1500. Then they might ultimately sell it for $1350

Sorry to hear of your family's loss.

It may be worthwhile for you to acquire a fairly recent copy of "Blue Book of Gun Values" by Fjestad(sp?). I have found most of their published price information to be at least "ballparky" and the descriptions are informative. www.bluebookinc.com

With all the draconian Second Ammendment infringement laws in some of the eastern and left coast states you may need to research local restrictions if you are not current on selling weapons.

A possible solution would be for you to search our a reputable local dealer who will take the weapons on consignment for a reasonable percentage. Around here, 10-15% seems to be about the going rate. Going this route would allow the dealer to sort out the riff raff, druggie scum and gang bangers who may try to buy your guns. . .

Good luck with your sales & Best Regards Don

I spend a lot of time at gunbroker.com, and I don't see a lot of guns selling. In fact, I'm about ready to give up on the site and cancel my account.

Most everyone sets their starting bid at about 30% over what the gun would bring.

Gunbroker.com is a great site to sell firearms.

I have watched for a few months now the Winchester ranger model. Lots for sale and I see the same ones coming up again and again. Lots of guns out there. I think that since times are tough people are trying to sell off parts of their collections.

I dont know where you are but Williams gun sight in Davison Mich. buys used guns.
Davison is just east of Flint.

Where are you located?
What are you trying to sell?

Actually I'd see if a local auctioneer would allow you to put the guns (and maybe some of his other things) on an upcoming auction. Unless they are extremely high dollar weapons they will probably bring top dollar or more.

Online auction sites will only allow licensed dealers to buy weapons and private buyers have to go through them. The people that use those sites have a better handle on the value of a firearm and bid accordingly.

The local auction will have people that don't have a freaking clue what the value of anything is and will almost always make used weapons bring new price or better. I've only seen a few times where a live local auction sold weapons that brought less than "book" value - both times I went home with them. The only time you might not get full price is if you are selling something that's rare or exceptional in price. Everyone has $250 for Mossberg 500, or $300 for a Savage rifle. Where you might come up short is with a Custer SN range NRA Rated Fine Model 1873 Colt Peacemaker, or a Fulton Armory M1A. Something that goes well beyond the buying power and knowledge of the casual buyer.

I agree that guns will USUALLY bring the best price at an auction. People go nuts over guns at an auction. Unless you have something rare, that's probably the best route to go. However, in Michigan I would only sell long guns at an auction. Auctioneers in Michigan require buyers to have a purchase permit for handguns; most potential buyers won't take the time to go down the the Sheriff's Department to pick up a permit before they go to an auction.

If you do sell any handguns without going through a dealer, the best way to do it is to consummate the sale at the Sheriff's Department. That way you can be sure it's registered in the buyer's name.
