IM looking for 2 final drives for my mv I would prefer gear driven but am also interested in chain driven. THANKS LUKE.

Seems to me you would want one or the other. Gear drive or chain drive. They are not interchangeable nor are the axle housings for each type. BWDIK.

MV's use chain drive. I saw a cotton farmer in Bakersfield, CA with several pallets of chain drive drop-boxes. Not sure why he had them. The High Drum pickers use gear drive. I would have bought a set but he couldn't find the axle housings. Goto CaseIH parts site to see what you need.

You need the chain drive. Don't know why you want gear drive as your MV will have 5 speeds going backwards. That can be fixed by flipping the differential ring gear and getting a low-drum cotton picker rear frame lid.

With the chain drive, you don't have to change the lid or ring gear.

I should have mentioned this earlier. MV's have significant value even if they need thousands of dollars in repairs. You shouldn't alter them. Sell it and go get a high-drum cotton picker for cheap bucks. Nobody thinks they are worth anything. It will be running backwards but the ring gear can be flipped, the shifting forks modified, and the lid already comes with a two hole shifter lid.

But I don't know what you have without several pictures or a serial number and detailed description. You may be calling it a MV but that doesn't mean you know what you are talking about, or your friends for that matter.

I also don't know what you want to do with this tractor. Are you looking for a reverse operation tractor to make a forklift or loader? We need info in order to suggest what needs to be done. You should also be posting on the Farmall board.

Thanks for your suggestions I have a real 1947 regular MV. Both the drops have been blownout and repaired. I want a NICE restored MV,I was under the impression I could just bolt gear drive housings on my tractor. I dont know all the ins and outs of this tractor. I appreciate all the help I can get. Also dont know much about cotton pickers and how they differ from MV's. THANK FOR YOUR HELP.

Because MSN Bing has fantastic aerial photos, I might be able to put an arrow on the pallets I saw in Bakersfield, CA. Whether I can come up with a street address and the owner of the property is unclear. But the city street will be super-imposed on the map/photo. Maybe you know somebody in the area who can find the location, make the purchase, and ship the parts to you.

I don't think you will find replacement chain-drive drop boxes in IL. You will need to go to sugar cane country or big vegetable farms; and the salvage yards in those areas. The salvage yards will want a huge premium for those parts. Some industrial machines like bituminous pavers used the IH chain-drive.

Don't purchase gear-drives. MV's weren't built that way. Be thankful you don't need the front end. The tractor below sold for $6500 in PA four years ago.
