Are there any rural areas of North Carolina where property values are still affordable?
For small acreage where a guy can keep a couple of hobby tractors?
What's a good website for research?

There are plenty of places in the eastern part of the state. The Triangle, Triad, and Charlotte areas are where it's so populated with transplants.

I am going to recommend the Murphy area. Land there is now reasonable and it is a good place for old tractors etc. I just left there and sold my 41 Famall A and 51 Farmall M and there is a very active bunch of enthusiasts. A good club also.

Living in Cabarrus County I can assure you that this isn't somewhere you want to be if your looking for affordable anymore. Twenty years ago 'rural' land out here was around $3-5000 an acre, now it's in the low teens. From what I've heard about prices in surrounding areas you can still buy in Anson County for decent prices. In Anson your far enough from Charlotte, Concord, etc to still be really rural but still close enough to be somewhat convenient to find parts and supplies.

Too, like someone else said I've heard that as you head East from here, toward the coast, that you can still get some good deals there, and the same holds true as you get up into the edge of the mountains.

I just found the site below that might give you a better idea of current prices.

Just bump South one state to SC. NC is known at the half stop state for the FL bound and return to NC in the summer.
