The tractor makes a rather loud grinding/shuttering noise when the clutch is fully depressed and when it is placed in reverse

A soft singing or whine would be considered normal in reverse. A loud grinding or vibration would sound like a failed planetary to me. I would have it split and repaired, the longer you run it the more expensive it will get and it won't be cheap at best. mEl

My 2090 and 2290 both do that. Not a grinding noise, but a different noise than when in a foward gear.
