howdy,i am in search of a live pto setup for a project i am working on. it needs to have the reduction inside the unit and pto shaft turn opposite direction of input. It should also have its own oil reservoir and be sealed at input shaft end. I am building a machine to mount my 6"3 pt. snow blower on (tired of the stiff neck) and need a way to put a live pto on it. i have already figured out how to get power from front of engine to the pto unit if i can find one that will work. i know there are many types of tractor"s/pto"s that i am not familiar with that might meet my needs. any ideas?

have you considered using a hydraulic drive system ,they can be run off the pto as well as the front of the engine, might be easier than locating the type pto your looking for, just my 2 cents worth hope you get it working

the cost of hydraulic components to make the h.p. required to hydraulically drive a blower are way to expensive to even be considered. thanks for the reply.

I usted to have one from a Cub Cadet, but it wouldn't be heavy enough. Couldn't you use a pto shaft from a pull type combine, and a No 60 roller chain at the rear. My neighbor in the early 60's did that on a super M IHC and ran a truck 4X4 front. It was pretty neat, geared it to just work in 3rd gear.

I have no idea if this would work or not but I was at a friends place the other day and he had some kind of rigged up thingy of his grandpa's. It used a four speed manual truck trans, and PTO (mounts on the side). The input was the output of the trans (Tractor PTO connected to the yoke for the drive shaft). Then the PTO drove the equipment. You would have to do the math and see if it might work for you. Have no idea if gear selection played a part or not. Not sure if you could make it live or not. I am fairly sure his setup wasn't. I didn't see any control for the PTO.

Well you could make a box to mount an old IH PTO unit in. They have their own pump and the drive could be run from the front of the box by the input shaft. If you got to Caseih .com and look at the PTo section you will see What I mean. Just fit a pulley or gear on the end of the shaft. If it needs to run from the reverse direction, just run the input shaft on the outside of the chain as posed to inside of the chain, that will give you the desired drive direction.

Why not use the PTO concept that is used on many highway trucks for the hydraulic system for a snow plow with a manual transmission. They are available in several gear ratios, with or with out a cluch. The ones with out a clutch you shift when you shut the engine off and then it is live. What speed ratio are you thinking? In other words what engine speed do you want to run at to have your 540 output. More questions? I probably still have some. I used to tach some truck PTO classes.

here is what i need everyone to picture in thier minds. something like a oliver 88 pto with an overcenter clutch to connect disconnect the power i.e. a live pto and it has the gear reduction built into the box to slow down rpm from engine, plus the pto shaft will turn in opposite direction as engine just like on a tractor. the only problem with the oliver setup is the very long input shaft and the fact that it is not sealed at the input shaft. i could shorten shaft and maybe even build a retainer to hold a seal but i was hoping someone may know of a setup with these features already.
