old feed delivery trucks

Like small coops had and are selling now to upsize, would they make decent dry fertilizer trucks for filling plantersas opposed to gravity wagon with an auger on it. Seems they can be bought cheap, even with a diesel.

They would work good, if they aren't already worn out. Many small feed bed delivery units are used to deliver salt mixes for cattle, and the salt is obviously hard on them. They basicly are nothing more than a glorified gravity box with three augers on them (floor, vertical and discharge). Most have two compartments, so you would be able to haul two different blends if needed.

I would be concerned the fertilizer would pack around the auger and keep it from turning.

Most of those units have compartment doors over the auger. As long as the door was closed prior to filling, you would be able to gradually open the door before unloading, thus minimizing the compaction effect on the auger.

Years ago I worked for a co-op. A lot of those drivers in the spring delivering fertilizer were part-time help. It's always too busy at that time of year so they drove the crap out of those trucks, most often not even checking the oil in the motor.

Make sure you get one with Air Brakes on it because salt in the feed and the fertlizer will eat at steel brake lines. Bob

I was thinking along similar lines, but using them to tender ice melt. Seems like it would work for fertilizer too. I've seen what looks like decent ones down here, with diesels, that don't bring much. Nobody wants them I guess.
