** Potatoe Plow **

Hi all ,
With ALL this snow .. got me thinking about spring and summer ...
Last year I planted some sweet potatoes .. and thinking this year to plant them again .. plus reg. potatoes ...
I'm getting older so digging them is work.. so I'm thinking of making a potatoe plow on the back of my wheel horse .. been looking at some ..so I got an idea on how I'm going to do it..

QUESTION : How DEEP do I have to go ?? also how WIDE should it be ?? .. any other points I should know about ... PLEASE share ...

I bought one about two years ago at a scrap yard for $15.00. Use it on my JD-40 3 pt. Digs about 6-7 inches deep and about 8 inches wide. Works real good I think. rw
 
We used to dig them by hand too... last year I reccomended to a friend that they try using an old single mouldboard plow. They said it worked good.
They had a big work crew, the average age was 9 I think. Find the Potato worked good as well.
 
I used my Ward's garden tractor for making the furrows to plant the seed potatoes and I used it to plow out the potatoes. I used the same old moldboard plow for plowing the garden. The plow came with a Viking garden tractor I bought in 1960 for $15.00. When I sold the Viking I kept the plow and had to make a frame to fit on my Wards tractor sleeve hitch. I use the tractor's hydraulic lift to raise and lower it. I always planted Kennebec and Red Bliss potatoes. I kept them in old upright freezer burried in the ground since my basement was too warm. PS: When we raised sweet potatoes on the farm we planted them on raised beds.
 
My dad used to raise potatos..he had slave labor
to do the planting, hoeing, digging. When the
last of his slaves, (3 sons) went into the army
he quit raising potatos !
