Well I have been growing beans for the past couple years but am now picking up some virgin ground and wanna sow corn into the sod for the first year. I need all the knowledge anybody can give me about growing corn. Its not a ton but with the way prices are its still good money. I need to know approx planting dates, when to fertilize and with what, so on and so forth. Thanks Guys!!

First of all you should get your ground tested to see what fertilizer you need, otherwise you might be wasting your money on something you don't need. Usuallly put fert. on when planting. Try to plant after your last frost. probally ought to plant Round-up ready corn. You should need to spray when its real small. Otherwise you will need to cultivate it . Good Luck.

By you saying virgin ground, then I assume that it is sod, like maybe pasture? If that is the case you would be well advised to turn it under as soon as the weather permits. We always tried to have our corn in the ground, by the second week of April,( weather permitting)in central Ill.As has already been suggested ,RR corn would be better for sod ground. There will likely be volunteer grass and weeds, from the sod, also you don't want to bring half rotted sod up with a cultivator, when Roundup will do a good job!
Good luck, and lets hope for a better(dryier) spring this year!

Put the soybeans on the sod; plant the corn on your bean stubble.

_Much_ better fertilizer situation.

Corn needs a lot of N, about a lb per bu you hope to grow; the soybean stubble gives you about 40 free lbs of N; the grass stubble will be worse than zero on this for you.

Paul I was told by a local farmer about 40 mins away that whenever he sowed beans into sod they didnt do to hot. Any reason they wouldnt do as good in sod as in formerly cropped ground? He said he always like to put corn into virgin ground.
