Home/Farm Defense (Guns)

What kind of firearms do you gentlemen possess? I am in a little debate with a friend who says my wish in purchasing an M-1 Garand is ridiculous when it comes to defense of my property. I already have a Remington 870 Express but I feel a rifle would be needed in the horrible event that I must defend my Grandparent's property.

I would be more scared of the 870 loaded with 00 buck than the M1, a 30 cal bullet mite miss, buck shot don't miss much

(quoted from post at 03:26:53 02/06/11) a smart man once said: "the m1 Garand is the best d@mn battle implement ever devised"

My same thoughts exactly. I am basically surrounded by some real "lowlife's" here in SoCal and I know for certain in a disaster situation people will try to loot from my property, steal fruit, etc.... I feel the M-1 would be a very nice surprise from a distance.

Hard to beat a shotgun. M1 Garands are relatively cheap on the open market. Do you know anything about an M1? Forget about putting a scope on it, but then again, we're talking "home defense" but you mention your granparents property. Is that what you need the extra range and hitting power for? M1s (good ones) are highly accurate out to 200 yards with the standard military sights. That's assuming the barrel isn't all worn out. I'd want to examine the rifle carefully and bench shoot it before purchasing. There are better rifles out there than even a pretty good old M1.

The M1 would definately do the job, but be sure to look into your state's laws. Here in Iowa you can only defend life, not property with deadly force and the person wishing to do harm to you better be within range close enough to do bodily harm or you may end up losing the lawsuit.

Myself, I utilize a 1911 .45, 9mm S&W, and a Ruger .38spl for home defense. Also a few other rifles and shotguns in the safe.

10-4.

Not too many sounds get your attention like the bolt slamming shut on a 12 guage pump shotgun. If you're close enough to hear it, you're close enough to have your head forcibly detached.

M-1, nice suprise from a distance yes, but as mentioned earlier, you cannot defend property with deadly force, especially when you are at a distance which most likely would determine that you are safe and able to retreat and avoid a deadly confrontation. I just talked to a guy today who was prosecuted years ago in Montana when he lived on his families ranch for pulling a gun on trespassing hunters. Usually a shotgun and pistol are your main self defense guns because of the distance at which self defense enounters occur. As a farm gun for shooting varmits then I can see the M-1, however that guns is really out dated compared to alot newer varmit models.

You have to be careful.
You cant shoot someone for trespassing and/or stealing produce. You can only shoot someone IF they Break INTO the house. You cant shoot them while they are on the front porch saying BOO. Now if they are shooting in the windows with a rifle then thats another story.

As far as a good rifle, I love my M-15 Armalite. I have put so many rounds threw it that it feels like an extension of my right arm. .223 caliber. Almost better then S*x.

The M1 Garand would do wonders with that .30-06 cartridge, a nice big hole in the torso would stop any loser breaking in. I dont own one, but would love to get one. My bank account is not unlimited.

I also have a remington 870 12 gage. A good home defense shotgun. But if 5 goons bust the door in I would rather have a 12 gage autoloader, kinda like Chuck Conners only a shotgun instead of a Winchester. (just blast away)
I love my Winchester, A great cowboy gun. But not a great home defense gun.

Get a clue. M1 runs about 1000 on the open market for a field grade one. Not cheap at all. Accurate out to 600 yards with iron sights and you can scope them. You ever handle one? I own two.
Who ever is advising this guy to shoot at people long distance are going to sentence him to a life sentence in jail.
Don't even think of shooting someone long distance or...even slinging a round or two over their heads.
Bunch of no nothing wannabe rangers.

Shotgun, point and shoot. Up here in Denver there was a case of a 86 year Koreon War vet charged with shooting a illegal trying to steel his goose neck trailer (Deltared should know about this story). They tried to run him over and he fired 2 shots hitting the driver. Guess who got arrested??? The illegals are still on the street.

LJS30. This is just one of our protectors.S&W 44 Mag custom grips. beaded front sight. Don't know if a picture is allowed or not, sure don't want to ruin this post for the rest of the folks. Now that my health is failing as this rate I find that I can no longer fire the weapon(way to much punch)for me to hold and grip. Gonna go for a smaller cal and a much lighter punch. My son has a 480 Ruger And I defiantly don't dare to push off a round, unless I want bruised hands. Can sure do the 12 Gauge Double though. That 12 is made in Spain. Bought it for the wife when I was on the road.No she hasn't shot me with it yet,but the thought must be there by now LOL. Nice subject ,INTERESTING !!! ps Loved the M1 GERAND
REGARDS LOU.

Not sure why you would need to protect yourself from 1000 yards.

I found the M1 Garand to be way to heavy. Only good for snipping. Only holds a few rounds taking your eyes of the emeny to reload.

I have a M1 Carbine. 30 round clip and good for anything between 50 and 200 yards (300 with pratice). Light weight, easy to move about with.

30-30 would be my choice if I didn't have the M1. But with it you have to cockit taking your gun off target. M1 is semi-auto and I can put three shots down range in the same time your sighting in your second shot.

Little closer and I op't for a short barrel 12GA. First shot a slug followed with a buck shot. After two shots your goning to be looking for the next target.

Hand guns I am still looking. I have a 45 semi-auto that I like for the speed and reloading. But its kind of heavy. 357 revolver is OK shooting but reload is a PITA and not good if you need it fast. Friend has 40 semi-auto that I am itching to try out.

This is what we have in our arsenal.

Shotguns
Mossberg O/U 12 Gauge Silver Reserve
Remington 870 Express 12 Gauge
Remington 870 Express 20 Gauge
Winchester Model 37 20 Gauge
Winchester Model 840 12 Gauge
Winchester Model 1300 20 Gauge

Rifles
Springfield 53-A .22 (Grandpa's Gun)
World War I 1916 Dated British .303
DPMS Panther AR-15 .223 (My Little Brothers Pride and Joy)

I pity the fool who dares to step into our house uninvited!

I went thru basic in 1953 and served in Infantry/Ranger units for the next 10 years. Fired thousands and thousands of rounds with the M1 Garand, M1 carbine M1918 ,30 cal Browning,.50 cal, etc;etc;etc. Sure, you can hit targets at 600 yards. Read my post again, you dope. I said "highly accurate" meaning tack driving accuracy out to 200 yards. Especially considering the age and condition of these weapons. Put a scope on it? I didn't say you couldn't put a scope on it. I just told him to forget about it. What I gave him was excellent advice considering he might never had an M1 in his hands.

Speaking as a former Deputy, California is a presumption state, if someone is in your house that should not be and you shoot them it is presumed a clean shoot. However that is rebutable. If you don't understand that, study that before you shoot anyone. California's presumption law is far better than the Castle laws other states have, and we have had it for 100 years or so. Understanding the law is most important. As for the weapon, In California use a Mini 14 with a wood stock as it came from the factory, use factory ammo, or your duck gun.You don't want anyone to think your were looking for a fight. The last thing you want is some politically motivated DA presenting your M4 clone, shooting explosive ammo you hand loaded , or a short barrel black plastic shotgun, to a jury. I am just suggesting, do as you want.

I think the gentlemen is referring to a rifle in case there is a break-down of society and we must protect our farms and homes(which is not out of the realm of possibility) I keep 3 of my Chinese-friend made SKS rifles with a crate of ammo in the safe. They are crude, but amazingly accurate and reliable. Benelli 12-ga pump with short barrel (turkey gun) but doubles as the under the bed gun. Colt Detective special .38 in the wives nightstand, Ruger Mark II .22 hidden in the kitchen, .40 Taurus in my truck. Hunting guns in the safe: Ruger No.1 in .280, Ruger M77 in Ought'6, and various remington 870 wingmasters, Ruger .22's, Ruger PC-40 .40 carbine and even a .22 chipmunk. All with plenty of ammo. I really would love to own a Garand one day

join the NRA & buy one thru the Civilian Marksmanship Program. They sell'em everyday cheaper than anywhere else

its not only yourself defense but the defense of anyone's "self". If someone 300 yds away has their hands on your wife, brother, kid or neighbor he can be shot as if he's 2 ft away & has his hands on your throat.

Bill, bo is an idiot, you gave excellent advise. Last count I had 15 M1 Garands, at least one from each manufacture. Also a few M1 Carbines and O3 and O3A3s. I have 4 Krags, 2 sporters and a rifle and a carbine. The Krag rifle is by far the most accurate. As it is not a "service rifle" banned from Camp Perry in 1905,I have to shoot CMP/NRA Highpower in the Match Rifle class. I do OK. Same with my trap door 45-70s, but I do not do so well in Match class. But I get to shoot. Save for perhaps the M1 Carbine I would not pick as a first choice any of these rifles for self defense, on the other hand none will let me down if I need them. I heard, from my uncle, a Korea vet, that the M3 Grease Gun is the best SMG the world has ever produced. Do you have any experience with it?

I tried looking on the NRA website but could not find anything about purchasing a garand. How much are they and how do I go about finding out about them?

Man, thanks for the input so far guys. It seems like you guys have some major experience with firearms so I really appreciate the advice. As for the situation I just want to make it clear that I'm talking about defending my family and property in a case of total lawlessness. I know it sounds crazy but I really believe here in SoCal all we need is the big earthquake to hit and all the parolees and halfway house people will use that time to prey on people like my Grandparents and others with property. I've never shot an M-1, and probably should before I make a purchase of course. But as someone who loves the history of this country I think it would be really a timeless piece to have in any home arsenal. Let alone the intimidation factor that comes with a WWII era weapon.

Remington 7600 for the need to reach out and touch something. Glock 40 cal for the idiot that enters unwelcomed. Several Saturday night specials for those who think they gotta get close. Several others in strategic locations.

Yes, I was in Armor/Cavalry as well and the M3 was issued to each tank crew. (One per crew of 4 men). Issued purely for the crew's self defense. Cheaply made but dependable. .45 cal ammunition went out the door so to speak and we lost the M1911A1 and the M3 grease gun. I still favor a shotgun for close protection in the "home defense" situation. Probably accompanied by a 1911A1 because it will knock people down although my friend shot a VC with one (a very small guy) and the round went through the fleshy part of his upper thigh and he just stood there and looked at it. Pretty funny but it did get the guys attention.

Membership in the NRA is not a requirement to purchase through CMP. The requirements are:

1. You must be a US citizen. Resident aliens are not eligible.

2. You must be a member of an "affiliated club". The NRA is not an affiliated club, but most state and local clubs qualify. Many veteran's organizations such as VFW and American Legion also qualify.

2. Participation in marksmanship activity. This is generally interpreted as competition but the list is long and includes holding a concealed carry permit.

3. You must otherwise be eligible to purchase a firearm.

More information on the CMP site.

If you feel like you want to own a Garand, you don't need to dream up an Armageddon scenario to justify it. It's a piece of history and many folks own M1 Garands for the joy of shooting them.

I own a variety of firearms, including a Federal Ordnance M14, several Winchester Model 70s and a Uberti 1860 Henry replica. And a couple of handguns. I don't buy factory ammo, preferring to use my own handloads. I just wish I could spend more time shooting them.

The scenario you describe isn't too likely. Yes, if there's a big earthquake you can be sure there's going to be looting and violence. But private property owners won't be the target. The looters will go where the swag is: the stores.

I say this from some experience because I was living in Long Beach, CA in 1992 during the Rodney King riots. There was looting and arson taking place a mile away in any direction, but the upper-middle-class neighborhood where I lived was untouched. The rioters preferred to ransack the stores in their local neighborhoods rather than go into the better areas of the city. Nonetheless it gave me some comfort to have a loaded M14 close at hand.

I agree with you on the Rem.7600. Don't have one but have always wanted to get one. Probaboy a better choice than some of the firearms mentioned in this post.

Whats the deal there, you have to register all your firearms and alot of the rifles are outlawed now right? Southern California near Mexico, ya I would be prepared there for sure.

If you did all that you'd know better than to say what you did. Rangers in the 50s and 60s and you in the units? Name the ranger units that you served in. If you can fire the M1 at a man size target at 600....you fired a crappy "marksman" when you qualified.

If you guys are going give advice to some kid who wants to be Rambo, give good advice. If you're going to call out some hpothetical military military experience, google up just what the real military deal is/was. For example, tankers were each issued a .45 pistols and a grease gun, not one for a crew of 4. Get a clue fellas, amongs other things, I was a driver and gunner on the M48/M60/M60A1....if you were REMF, just admit to it, there was no shame in that.

I agree with JBMac... SKS can be had very cheaply. Fairly good gun, if you take the time to clean them up and make sure they're in good working order. I got several years back just before the ban, fresh out of the packing crates from factory. (Probably in storage for years.). Cleaned them up. refinished the wood, polished up the metal, and cold blued them. Worked pretty good. Only had one that had a problem with firing pin sticking, leading to unwanted conseqiences. New firing pin designed to cure the problem cured that problem. (Spring to assure that pin returned back into bolt after firing.) We have guys using them for deer hunting, so they poke enough punch. Somewhere near a 30-30. You don't need long range gun for protection. I'd start with a 870, or similar, rifle later.

I'm not going to list my guns, or where they are stored, but FAIR WARNING, don't come around here looking for TROUBLE!

Kimber 45 auto,Winchester 12 gauge Defender,Colt HBar
AR15 w 6.5x20 scope, Remington 700 in .270 w 4x14 scope,
Remington 700 in 7mm08 x 2.5x8 scope.

Don't start no trouble and there won't be any!

A Garand for home defense??? Musta watched Gran Torino too often.

Hey I loved that movie although the ending was very sad. :)

Let me explain myself for a second guys. I'm not trying to be rambo and really hate the feeling like I cannot trust people in the town I was born and raised. My family has a ten acre produce ranch that is surrounded by a Wal-Mart, shady tract housing right on the other side of our apricot orchard, an Indian reservation about three miles away where automatic gun fire is heard every night, and a city that welcomes halfway-houses and section eight housing. Though I am of Latino origin, I am pure American who has the flag of the United States waving proudly outside my house in a sea of Mexican flags surrounding me. I have already had to run off numerous people from our property and had some bozos start a small bond fire in our orchard several months ago. Shoot, I even had a guy flat out tell me he'd come onto our property whenever he felt like it. Well once he saw my Remington 870 one night as I was running my dogs I've never seen him again. I stay in this town because it was once a beautiful place to leave, my family has land here, and I'm a tenured school teacher which means a lot these days. Eventually I want to relocate to Washington State or possible Arizona. However for the time being I'm here and know the little thugs around me are just waiting for an excuse to steal tools and other valuables on our land. I know there are some WWII/Vietnam vets and other knowledgeable guys who can and have given some good advice. :)

It isn't the colour of your skin, it's the colour
of your heart.
One night in a bar fight a black man saved me
from getting stabbed in the back by another black
guy.

I don't know why anyone would list their firearms on the internet. Talk to me Feb 12th at the Sioux Falls gun show and I'll tell you face to face. See you next Sat. Dale

Get a couple (or a dozen) SKS military rifles. Rugged and cheap. Use cheap military 7.62 X 39 ammo. That or cheap steel-cased Russian ammo. If the gun misfires, it has a nice fold-out bayonet. If you can't use that, the stock makes a nice baseball-bat. And, if somebody breaks in and steals your guns, no big loss. Just buy some more.

They come in three flavors - Chinese, Russian, and Yugoslavian built. Chinese have the best chrome barrels, Russian the best wood, and Yugos the best overall craftsmanship for the price (on average). Kind of equivlent in firepower to the good-old USA 30-30.

Unfortunately, home defense with any amount of weaponry is probably not going to happen unless you've got a team of people to stand along side of you -and take over when you're sleeping.

(quoted from post at 11:20:02 02/06/11) I don't know why anyone would list their firearms on the internet.

   Not something I would do.

I can't list mine cause I lost em all in a tragic boating accident. Yep, they're all gone.

12 gauge with extended mag. Good from point blank to
100 yards depending on the load.
Those sabot slugs are outstanding.

Teddy. Well I now wish I could fire it but I gave it to My Son. I'm looking for a smaller caliber so I would be able to compete with both my son and daughter(daughter has a 357) and boy can she hit the target.Full target of a person. Mostly head shots, her 357 barks some for me also. My son bought me a L.H.cross draw holster for the 44 Mag for my birthday 5 years back. Love to have the years back . Regards LOU.

Bout 25 years ago in detroit, worked with fella name of Jack. 3 bozos come to his front door with gas can and matches saying they would burn him out. Bout 3 foot from the door Jack takes his shotgun and blows 2 of em away and wounds the 3rd. He did I think 8 years in prison. True story. Got fired and his family was on welfare. I know. I saw them every couple of days. Dave

well in the S#!t hits the fan senario I kind like the idea of a 12 Ga. pump loaded with 00Buck and/or slugs! as for a reasonable long range rifle a .303 brit,or a .762x54 Russian , are just fine and priced affordible theM-1 is a NICE gun but they arent a affordable home defence gun a S.K.S,or a good quality hunting gun would work in a end of the world scene

what is my choice of a rifle to keep society low life at bay if the time comes? Ruger mini-Ranch 14. 30 shot magazines, .223 ammo readily available at reasonable costs and with a 3 x 9 scope, does pretty good at knocking things down. You can shoot the mini-Ranch all day and not be sore. Very reliable.

Hard to beat a shotgun for home defense. MO has the castle law that allows you to use deadly force to protect property and person. You would have a very hard sell to make a jury think your life was in danger at 200 yards. Show some restraint and make sure of your target. Hard to do at 200 yards. I almost shot my 17 year old daughter a few years back when I heard someone trying to get in our back door @ 4 AM in a down pour. Saw a figure in a black hooded jacket comeing through my back door. Had the saftey off and was about to drop the trigger when something just didn't look right. She had snuck out to meet a no good boy friend. She cried, I cried, the boy friend never came back. Be sure of who you shoot. You cant take it back.
