PTO speed changer

Does anyone make a gearbox to reduce 1000 rpm to 540? One that will handle a 100 hp load?

I"d like to run a 540 RPM forage bagger with my JD 5020...

Just idle it back to about 1100 rpm engine speed . It will be real close like 25 rpm off or less. It should run it there. Or use a smaller tractor and run on 540 shaft.

I respectfully disagree with caterpillar guy. The engine in your 5020 will be below its powerband when idled down that far. It is entirely possible that your bagger will be too much of a load for the tractor unless it running near high idle. I've known folks that attempted to shred stalks with a John Deere 4840 (using a 540 adapter) on a 15' batwing cutter. They tried to putt around the field with the engine idled way back, but the tractor fell flat on its face. I think that you are on the right track looking for a speed changer or something along those lines. I can't give you a link but try this: Google "Precision Farm Parts"

Hub City makes one but it is expensive. I believe it slides right over the 1000 rpm PTO shaft and is equipped with a torque arm. It will fit any 1000 rpm shaft. Go to their website or any bearing house.

You could also get a 2 to 1 planetary reducer on eBay. It would also require two PTO adaptor shafts and maybe some machine work. The whole assembly may be too long, however.

Been running a 9 fooot ag bagger for over ten years with a 1000 to 540 adapter and the enging at about half throttle. With all that power of the 2-180 it has never been a problem. Works great and sipps fuel. Cheaper to run than the 2-135 wide open at 540. Try it see if the power band is correct on that tractor might really like it.

My boss has been running a grain bagger on a 4840 with 1000/540 adapter at about 1200 RPM for several years.

Thanks for the comments, guys. My bagger is 10 foot, and takes a good 110-120 hp- more than the 5020 is going to do at low RPMs.

It would be nice to use it on the bagger though.

Thanks again.

Been running a 540 rpm forage harvester with a 5020 at about 1300 to 1500 engine rpm past couple of years. (I am overspeeding it a bit.) Granted it is turned up and turboed but you would be surprised how much power 531 cubic inches has at 1300 rpm. I'd atleast give it a try.

Sometimes an implement has a step up gearbox, first thing off the pto line. Find one of these, and plumb it into the pto line, and you're set.
