John Smith started the day early
having set the alarm clock [MADE IN JAPAN]
for 6am.
While his coffeepot [MADE IN CHINA]
was perking. he shaved with his
electric razor
[MADE IN HONGKONG]
He put on a dress shirt [MADE IN SRI LANKA]
designer jeans [MADE IN SINGAPORE]
and tennis shoes [MADE IN KOREA]
After cooking his breakfast in his new
electric skillet[MADE IN INDIA]
He sat down with his calculator [MADE IN MEXICO]
to see how much he could spend today.
After setting his watch [MADE IN TAIWAN]
to the radio[MADE IN CHINA]
He got in his car [MADE IN GERMANY]
filled it with fuel [FROM SAUDI ARABIA]
and continued his search for
a good paying AUSTRALIAN
JOB.

At the end of yet another discouraging
and fruitless day,
checking his computer[MADE IN MALAYSIA]
John decided to relax for awhile.
Putting on his sandals[MADE IN BRAZIL],
poured himself a glass of wine[MADE IN FRANCE]
and turned on his TV [MADE IN INDONESIA],
and then wondered why he can't find a good
paying job in AUSTRALIA.
And now he is hoping he can get help from a Prime Minister {MADE IN WALES].

How sad? More like how stupid for America. As high as the unemployment rate is cant we start making these things in America again??? And creating jobs for the American workers?

Probably his Union ran the last company he worked for into bankruptcy or forced them to move overseas. Also didn't say if he checked when buying his groceries if he made sure his food was US grown he bought.

On that if the groceries were from the USA then they were also imported as it clearly says Austraila(?) Also the wine mentioned would have had to have been imported as that is about a country in the southern hemisphere.

Could have substituted Michigan in there in a few places and ended up with out 8 year looser governor MADE IN CANADA!

We could make stuff in America (and should!), but how many Americans would be willing to py the increased cost of American made goods?

Because someone in a 3d world country making a garment (for example) for pennies in pay beats any American who would expect a decent living wage.

We have to wake up and say to ourselves "Buying poducts from my fellow American is important. I'm willing to spend the extra money so my neighbor has a job".

I think that's the kind of "redistribution of wealth" that we can all get behind!

Why can't we say to the companies of the world that to sell your item in America, it must have xx% American-produced content? Other countries do that all the time. Start out with a small percentage, then increase it as time goes by.

Just spitballin' here.

If we had import duties on those products like we used to,they wouldn't be cheaper. On the same hand,if American workers were making those products and being paid a good wage to do so,that money would circulate through the economy and we would ALL be able to AFFORD to pay the slightly higher prices FOR those products.
The talk radio crowd talks til they're blue in the face about cutting taxes and the money circulating throughout the economy, but can't get it through their brainless heads that higher wages do the same thing, and more.

We have gotten used to paying very little for products then simply throwing them out when they no longer work and buying another cheap, poor quality one.
It would be very difficult for any company that wants to start making common everyday household items in North America because of a few key things.
1. Wages (also healthcare etc.)
2. Price of electricity
3. Building something of quality means it will cost more than the import stuff hence many people couldn't afford it.
4. Environmental laws that make it very difficult to manufacture anything in North America without more red tape (hence more $$$$)
5. With there being so many fewer good paying jobs there is less $$ to go around so your market is correspondingly smaller

So while I would love to see it, I can't imagine it ever happening. It would be a VERY slow process, probably taking 50-75 years to undo what has been done in the past 20-30 years.

It's one thing to import cheap consumer goods, but where it all went wrong was when we exported the high paying jobs making DURABLE goods here at home. That's something that we'll NEVER recover from.

NAFTA started this back in mid 90,s not the unions dont just complain write your elected officials they dont like to talk about the free trade agreements that sent our jobs overseas
