hydraulic filter mounting

Hi all,

I'm modifying the hydraulic system on an old tractor, going to drive the pump off the crank pulley, pump will do 18 gallons/minute at 2600psi at 2200rpm (gear pump). I'm drawing hydraulic oil from the rear casting through at 1 1/2 inch line. I have a 100 mesh filter and housing to go in the suction line, it looks like a regular spin on filter, but just has a mesh screen inside, and can handle 25gpm but does anyone know if the filter has to be mounted vertically (head at top) or could i mount it upside down (filter above head) or horisontally? Filter place said head above filter, but i'm short of space that way (10inch filter).

Ideas anyone?? Thanks.

It can be mounted any way you please, oil doesnt care. Its just messier when filter is on top when changed. But who cares dirt soaks up spilt oil.

That type Filter is suposed ot be on return line. If it stops up will trash pump. My brother-n-law had a suction line stop up and it cost him $950 for a new pump. Would mount filter under the holder that way you can fill it before installing for easer priming . Also mount in place that Brush and other things will not dammage it. Mine is mounted on side of rear end and some times it gets bent up by brush and limbs while brushoging.
